"Rade" – "Poppa" – "P.B." Lt. Col. Raymond Herman Rade, USAF (Ret.) passed away peacefully in the early hours of November 1, 2008. He was born to Herman August Rade and Florence Dyer on March 13, 1922 in Eagle River, Wisconsin. After graduating High School he attained a teacher's certificate at Stephens Point, Wisconsin and taught in Woodruff, Wisconsin until he joined the Army Air Corps in 1942. He became a Troop Carrier Pilot and was sent to the South Pacific until the end of WWII. While stationed at Bergstrom in Austin, Texas, he met and married June Thorp, a union that lasted over 64 years and produced twin sons, Bruce Ray and Brent Jay Rade. After his tour in Vietnam, he was assigned to Hickam AFB in Hawaii where he and June spent the last four years of his career. They retired to Austin in 1973. His sharp and steady wit will be sorely missed by those who knew him best. He is survived by his wife, June Rade; sons, Bruce Ray Rade, Brent Jay Rade; two grandsons, Matthew Garett Rade and Dustin Garth Rade; daughter-in-law, Kay Rade. The family is grateful to the caring people at the Westlake Summit and for the tender loving care from Hospice Austin during his last days.
