Lucille Mecey was born October 18, 1924 to Katherine Nicholas and Anthony Garza in Austin, Texas. She had a full life’s journey that included many talents such as singing, sewing, gardening, painting, cooking, and playing the piano. Her talents in singing would eventually lead her to perform for members of the USO at Camp Swift and even cutting a record of some of her music. Everyone loved to come to her home on Sundays and holidays, where she would cook fabulous meals and make her famous sweet tea. She loved her yard and garden and often painted artwork of the beautiful flowers that she grew.
Lucille graduated from Austin High School in 1942 and later went on to marry the love of her life, Gus Mecey, on May 5, 1946 at Saint Mary’s Cathedral. They prospered, even though they started with nothing, running the bus station in Bastrop, Texas and then later owning farms, real estate, nursing homes, and the famous Paradise Bar in downtown Elgin, Texas. Together they had two beautiful daughters, Sandra and Cathy. Lucille has been a member of the Elgin community for over 70 years.
Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, her three siblings, her husband Gus, and her daughter Cathy (+) (Dr. James Geer). She is survived by her daughter Sandra (Dr. Jack Sahadi), five grandchildren, Chemaine (Court) Koester, Amber (William D.) Hargrove, Damon Sahadi, and R. Reagan (Mary Margaret) Sahadi, ten great grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Lucille was able to remain in her long-time home that she loved for the past seven years, with the loving care of Ray Jonga and Mary Nakibuka. The family would like to thank these two ladies for all of their commitment to care for her.
