04/26/1924 – 02/17/2017
Lucille was born 92 years ago at the family farmhouse in Okeana, Ohio. Just prior to the crash of 10/29/29, her parents and she relocated to the big lights of Hamilton, Ohio, where her father started building houses. Lucille was gifted and was awarded with an academic scholarship to Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, where she was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and graduated in 1945 with a BA in English and Education. During this period, she met and married her late husband, USAF Col. (ret.) Eldon S. Riley, also from Hamilton, Ohio (he predeceased her in 2002).
Following their marriage in January 1946, they enjoyed multiple assignments to include Nebraska, Bergstrom (twice), Phoenix, Charleston, San Bernadino, San Rafael, the Philippine Islands, Australia, Formosa (Taiwan). Lucille enjoyed all of her travels, but most of all appreciated the many friendships she maintained long after moving away.
After Eldon’s military retirement in 1971, he and Lucille moved to the new housing area of Northwest Hills. Here they encountered new home adventures that involved dynamiting just to plant trees and have an in-ground pool. During this period, Lucille also did substitute teaching at the new schools of Doss, Murchison, and Anderson High. In addition, Lucille was involved in several bridge clubs and for over 25 years was a proud volunteer with the Assistance League of Austin.
Lucille is survived by her four children, Cynthia (husband Ed) Adams of Cincinnati, Ohio, Pamela (husband Jim) Lodwick of Austin, Texas, David (wife Janet) of Des Moines, Iowa, and Doug Riley of Austin, Texas as well as her four grandchildren, Erin Montoya of Stinson Beach, California, Matthew Howell of Cave Junction, Oregon, and Grant and Logan Riley of Austin, Texas, and great grandchildren, Kai and Felix Montoya of Austin, Texas.
Visitation will be held from 5-7pm on Thursday, February 23rd at Cook-Walden Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30am on Friday, February 24th at Covenant Presbyterian Church at 3003 Northland Drive in Austin. Interment will follow at Cook Walden Memorial Hill Cemetery in Pflugerville.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a more lasting gift to the Assistance League of Austin, 4901 Burnet Road, Austin, Texas 78756 or a charity of your choice.
Lucille’s family sincerely thanks the staff of Brookdale Northwest Hills for their kindness and attention to her over the past two and a half years.
Her family is sad for their loss, but know that Lucille (Mother/Nonnie) is now dancing, singing and enjoying good health. “It’s TGIF somewhere!” We love you.
