1922-2018
Lucille Spencer, 95, of Austin TX, formerly of Niederwald, TX was called home on Wednesday, September 26, 2018. Lucille grew up in the Rogers Ranch/Niederwald area, riding her horse to a one-room German school. She professed her faith in Christ, and at the age of 15 was confirmed at the Niederwald Evangelical & Reform Church the same day as her mother, grandmother, and aunt.
She graduated from Lockhart High School, and worked for the US Ration Board during World War II. She moved to Austin in 1946, and went to work for the Texas Employment Commission. She started as a clerk, and retired 38 years later as a Senior Accounts Examiner. She met the love of her life, Clyde, in April of 1947, and they were married 4 months later. They were happily married for 63 years until his death in 2011.
She joined First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1961, and served on most committees, and in many capacities, working tirelessly behind the scenes, letting her actions speak about her strong faith.
Family has always been her greatest joy, and she never missed the Ohlendorf family reunion, since its beginnings in 1946. Her home has always been a welcome place to sit and talk with friends, enjoy homemade cookies or piece of cake, or hear a story about living during the Great Depression. Her heart was always full of love which extended beyond her family to her Japanese exchange students, her daughter’s friends, and then to her grandchildren’s friends. She was “mom” or “meme” to three generations of family and friends.
She is survived by her daughter Brenda Wohlfarth and husband Eugene; grandson Christian Harkins and wife Tori; granddaughter Carla and husband Jeremy Oertli; great-grandchildren Piper and Teagan Harkins, Lucille Hadden, and Cody and Clyde Oertli. She is also survived by her adopted Japanese exchange students Akiko (Mindy) Watanabe and her daughter Akari, and by Hodaka Asai and his family, Annette, Anna, and Simon. She is also survived by nieces and nephews, and countless friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Clyde, daughter Elaine Kay, and her brother Harold Braune.
The family wishes to extend its heartfelt thanks to the 6th and 4th floor staffs at both Dell Seton Medical Center and Seton Main, as well as the staff at Christopher House for their loving care. They also wish to thank Encompass Home Care, whose home care visits brought her joy and new friends she treasured.
