Lyle was born in Long Beach, California, in 1941 to Chester Miles Boardman and Maxine Lillian (Miller) Boardman, both now deceased. He was preceded in death by one brother, Miles Davis Boardman. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Gerre, as well as three daughters, Elizabeth Smith, Erin Boardman, Janice Kearley and husband Stephen, and five granddaughters, Catherine Campbell, Laura Smith, Emma Boardman-Larson, Chloe Larson, and Ruth Kearley.
Lyle, his wife, and his oldest daughter arrived in Austin in May 1968 and stayed for the rest of his life.
Lyle attended Long Beach City College, Long Beach State College (now Cal State University at Long Beach), and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from the University of Texas in 1972.
Lyle worked for North American Aviation in Anaheim, Fullerton, and Downey, California, during the Apollo Moon mission era (when he and Gerre met) and was later employed by Tracor (now BAE Systems) for 39 years, retiring in 2007. He worked in several administrative roles and retired as a director in the Finance department.
Lyle was an avid stamp collector, joining the Austin-Texas Stamp Club in 1976 and holding all available offices over the years, and was Secretary-Treasurer at the time of his death.
Lyle was active in three statewide stamp-collecting associations and a member of many other specialty organizations. He was named the Distinguished Philatelic Texan of 2002 by the Texas Philatelic Association for his service to the organization and other philatelic activities.
Lyle loved the Texas hill country and spent countless hours working on his 5.6-acre homestead, employing the Xeriscape approach to landscaping, and, inspired by J. David Bamberger, was still in the process of eliminating Cedar trees from his land until his illness. He was active in the Xeriscape Garden Club and served as Treasurer when it disbanded.
