When Marcus was only 9 years old, he confessed his faith to receive Jesus as his Lord and Savior under the then Pastor of Oak Meadow Baptist Church, where, as a youth, he participated in many activities. Marcus even learned to play the bass guitar under the direction of the praise team leader, former neighbor, and good friend.
Marcus graduated from W. Charles Akins High School in Austin, TX. He later worked as an HVAC Tech, a job he had attended Capital City Trade School and acquired his degree in. Marcus worked with a few apartment complexes in North and South Austin. He enjoyed his choice of employment. He was very talented in his field.
Marcus was one of the best fishermen ever. Alongside his siblings and his son, he also enjoyed disc golf, watching football (Vikings), basketball, and numerous other sports. Camping, boating, and spending time with friends in South Padre Island. He loved to cook, which started from the time he was 5 or 6, watching his mom as she prepared family meals. He loved to grill and create his own masterpiece meals. Our son was a real character that could keep any of us laughing when he was in a good mood.
Somewhere along the way, he found himself slipping away into a place of uncertainties in life and no matter how hard he tried, he could not pull himself out of those dark moments. Marcus referred to those times as “Dreams into Nightmares.” We miss him dearly with hearts that are deeply and heavily affected by his sudden passing. We give God the glory for bringing him into our family and allowing us the 37 years to borrow him. We realize no matter what has happened, our Lord is still in control. We must not doubt the reason for His taking of Marcus’ soul so soon! All of our days are numbered here on this side of Heaven. Each of us has a choice to make while we have breath in our lungs. Believe in Jesus as God Son or not to believe. As for our family, we follow Jesus so that there will not be any doubt of where our souls rest. Many times we reminded Marcus the only Name that He needs to rely on to rescue him from anything is Jesus. Sometimes he would say “oh mom, sorry I was going to go to church with you, but I woke up too late.” I often reminded “Mijo, don’t forget church on Sunday, please go with us. Most of his responses were “ I know momma.” Only God knows what his last words or thoughts were.
Marcus is preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents. He is survived by his parents, Jesus E. and Debra E. Cruz, his son Marcus A. Cruz, brothers, Quincy Colbert, Timothy Colbert, sister, Cecilia M. Brown (Derak), and niece Aubrey, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Along with his dog Khona and his friend the mother of his only child, Christina A. Hernandez.
