Margaret Cassidy of Austin passed peacefully on Sunday, January 27th at her home with family at her side. Born in Brooklyn in 1938, Margaret taught English in the New York City public school system until 1965. That year, she married her beloved husband, John, an Army officer, and began an adventurous globe-trotting life. Upon his retirement, John and Margaret's family settled in Austin. Margaret was a popular and cherished member of Toastmasters and Emmaus Catholic Church in Lakeway and, later, the Renaissance retirement community and St. Thomas More's Ones group.
Treasured by family and friends for her strength, character, and ability to take great joy in the small details of daily life, her positive outlook and warm smile touched even those who only briefly met her. One person summed it up well: "Margaret was a wonderful, classy lady." She was indeed.
Margaret is survived by her son, Daniel of Franklin Park, NJ; son, Patrick, of Austin; and daughter Megeen, son-in-law Shane, and her adored grandchildren, Avry and August. In addition, she is survived by a wide circle of friends around Austin and around the world.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice Austin or the American Cancer Society.
Margaret's family wishes to express our heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff of Seton Medical Center's oncology team and Hospice Austin.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 1st at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, North Lamar. Services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 10205 North FM 620, Austin. Burial will follow at Our Lady of the Rosary Cemetery in Georgetown.
