Margaret “Peggy” Ann McCaffree Gerrie, age 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday, the 26th of October 2025, surrounded by her family. She was born on the 13th of September 1934, in East Lansing, Michigan, to Charles and Esther McCaffree.
Peggy attended Michigan State University, where her father coached swimming for 27 years. She graduated with a degree in Education and remained a loyal Spartan fan all her life. She married Robert “Bob” Edward Gerrie on the 28th of December 1956 and enjoyed more than 68 years of marriage before her passing. They first lived in Rochester, New York, before moving to Austin in 1962. She was the proud mother of three children, all of whom survive her.
Devout followers of Jesus, Peggy and Bob were members of Hyde Park Baptist Church, where they taught 10th grade Sunday school for almost 30 years and took many groups on Choir Tours, leaving a lasting legacy in the lives of hundreds of students. From there, they moved to Austin Christian Fellowship, founded by their daughter and son-in-law. Most recently, they attended Austin Baptist Church with beloved friends. Peggy was also active in her community. In her younger years, she was an avid tennis player at Westwood Country Club, and throughout her life, she loved volunteering with the Settlement Home for Children, where she built many close relationships. She and Bob also served on the first Young Life Committee in Austin—an organization which would greatly impact the lives of their children and grandchildren—and dedicated decades of support to Hyde Park Schools, from which each of their grandchildren graduated.
Peggy’s children remember her as a gentle, loving, and loyal matriarch who was always present and kind. The epitome of a mother, she was intelligent, funny, and sometimes sassy (particularly with Bob). Her faith ran deep as did her love of her large family, whom she led well, with intentionality, calmness, and contentment.
Her eleven grandchildren cherish their memories of time spent with their Mimi: throwing Beanie Babies down the laundry chute, eating strawberries with LOTS of powdered sugar, and watching Free Willy with Gattis Pizza after a day swimming in the pool. She was always there to cheer them on at school events and for sports and to celebrate their many achievements.
Most importantly, Peggy loved Jesus and set an example of serving Him that will impact generations.
Peggy is predeceased by her parents and her brother, Don McCaffree. Her survivors include her husband, Bob, and their three children: Linda and husband Jim Stafford with their children, Caleb and wife Sabrina Stafford, Kate and husband Ryan Weaver, David and wife Ashley Stafford, and Megan and husband Andrew Forrester; Jay and wife Kerri with their children, Andrew and wife Allison Gerrie, Elizabeth and husband Clay Johnston, Adam and wife Brooke Gerrie, and Anna Grace Gerrie and fiancé Alex Benkendorfer; and Susie and husband Will Davis, Jr. and their children, Will and wife Amy, Emily and husband Kenton Boone, and Sara and husband David Regan. She is also survived by her 18 great-grandchildren, as well as her two brothers, Chuck and David McCaffree.
The Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, the 7th of November at 11:00 AM at Austin Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests you consider a gift to Young Life Austin, Austin Baptist Church, or Austin Christian Fellowship.
