

Margaret Peggy Lewis passed away peacefully on Monday, August 7th. Peggy was born on June 3, 1925 in San Antonio, Texas. She was the only child of Edward Sibley and Ethel Eden Sibley. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 52 years, R B Lewis. She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Gallagher of Austin and her husband Tom; her son, Dr. Ed Lewis of Austin and his wife Janet; as well as 4 grandchildren: Eden and Reid Gallagher and Jason and Sara Lewis. Peggy had a long and wonderful life which she enjoyed to the fullest. She attended St. Marys Hall in San Antonio through high school and then graduated with a B.S. degree from Sweetbriar College. She then earned a Masters Degree in Biochemistry at the University of Texas at Austin. She was on the team of biochemists working under Dr. William Shive at UT that first isolated Vitamin B12. Peggy and R B married in 1950 and spent 52 happy years together. Peggy devoted her life to her husband, her children and grandchildren, friends and to serving others. She was a hospital volunteer, first at St. Davids and then at Seton Medical Center, for over 30 years. She and R B were generous supporters of higher education, establishing scholarships and supporting other programs at St. Edwards University and The University of Texas at Austin. They also supported Seton Medical Center, Childrens Hospital of Austin and many other charitable organizations. She and R B enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing golf and traveling all over the world. Peggys courage, strength, dignity and grace were an inspiration to many, especially her family. She was well known for her ready smile and cheery greeting for everyone she met. Peggy was loved and will be missed by all who knew her. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Lillian Eppright for being such a devoted and loving caregiver to Peggy. A memorial service and reception to celebrate Peggys wonderful life will be held on Monday, August 14th at 4:00 p.m. at Harris Bell Hall in Westminster Manor, 4100 Jackson Avenue, Austin, Texas. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Carolyn Lewis Gallagher and Edward Lewis scholarships at St. Edwards University or The University of Texas at Austin.
