Our quintessential family Matriarch, Margaret ‘Margie’ Coy Ramos was called to everlasting life this Ash Wednesday, March 2nd in the year of our Lord 2022. Her journey as daughter, sister, devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother ‘Mamo’ began September 28, 1940 in Bastrop, Texas. Born to parents Manual Coy Sr. (1899 – 1984) and Clara Solis Coy (1911 – 2006), she was one of six children: Manual Coy Jr., Guadalupe Coy and Isabel Ruiz have preceded her in death; while she is survived by Candelaria Bocanegra and Joe Coy Sr.
Growing up Margie attended Austin Schools where she made many and continued lifelong friendships. Her work experience included switchboard operator at Scarboroughs, Planned Parenthood of Austin, and with the City of Austin where she spent many years working at the Robert Mueller Airport, the first civilian airport built in Austin, later to be relocated to the now Austin Bergstrom International Airport, until her retirement. Her volunteer work extended from volunteering at Sacred Hearth Catholic School (always readily available when needed in a pinch); Catholic charity events throughout the Austin and surrounding community; Planned Parenthood, various political campaign fundraisers, and many more. Her advocacy efforts, which she was very passionate about, were geared toward women’s rights and the inclusion of people of color in the Austin community, such as: ending segregation in schools; supporting minority candidates in politics; women’s ‘my body, by choice’; and a persons right to love who you love. She instilled her personal mantra, “No Matter What It Takes”, to her children, for the betterment of all people. “When one door opens for you, hold it open thus allowing others the same opportunity….no matter what it takes!”; “When you see something wrong, step-up/speak-up…no matter what it takes!”.
Margie met the love of her life when he came to her aide after a minor car accident, which then began a courtship. She married her handsome musician, Alfonso ‘Al’ Ramos Jr. in 1957. Their steadfast bond and everlasting devotion to one another truly defined the meaning of a Christian Marriage. Throughout their blessed marriage of 59 years, Margie and Alfonso remained fully committed to the physical and spiritual wellbeing of their five beloved children: Alfonso III (wife Sylvia, sons Alfonso IV and Christopher); Laura (husband Jeff Hobby, sons Joshua, Justin and Jake); Lisa (husband Burt Fowler, daughter Mary and son Jason); Gina (husband Jose Muniz, sons Jonathan and Jaret); and Orlando (wife Kim, daughters Meagan and Gabrielle).
There were many times when Al was returning home from his work late at night, and he would call Margie to let her know when he would be home – she would always be there to answer the phone, no matter how late it was, and ask “what do you want to eat when you get home?” Al would often ask for his favorite snack, and no matter how early in the morning he returned, Margie would be there with his coffee, carnitas and beans. While they had many hobbies, at the top of their list was their Wednesday night couples bowling league at the DartBowl Bowling alley, where they made and cherished the many friendships that grew from there (and picking up Mrs. Johnson’s Doughnuts on their way home), and having the ability to share, without question, the fruits of their success with others.
Later in life, one of Margie’s greatest joys was spending time with and helping care for her 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren: Alfonso IV (Megan, Madison and Alfonso V); Joshua (Halli-Kate and Brooks); Justin (Ezekial, Copeland and Yvonne); Meagan (Jaxon, Mack and Kinsley). She was so happy to be able to make even simple contributions to each one of their lives. She had such a profound love for her family, extended family, and friends.
Dear Lord we pray that our fond memories of Margie’s good-natured infectious laughter, comforting smiles, dedication to family, adamant love of animals, delicious food and bountiful energy will forever live in our hearts. Margie will be missed dearly, but we rejoice that she is with her soulmate Al for eternity in the caring arms of our Lord. May you rest in peace our precious Matriarch. Amen.
Margaret’s children would like to thank their spouses who each loved their mother-in-law unconditionally; all who loved and cared for her throughout various periods in her life; and those who chose her to be their second mom (neighborhood kids, baseball kids, cheerleading kids, etc.), as she loved and cared deeply for all, and never forgot each and every one of you.
A visitation for Margaret will be held Tuesday, March 8, 2022 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM with a Rosary Service beginning at 7:00 PM at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 6300 West William Cannon Drive, Austin, TX 78749.
