Margie Marie Knudsen Walker departed this world on January 23rd, 2023, to join her Heavenly Father and her family and friends in Heaven before her. Born on January 31, 1927, in Austin, Texas, Margie left us after 95 years of a well-lived and much-loved life. Margie was preceded in death by her parents, William and Bertha ‘Birdie’ Knudsen, her brother Marvin Knudsen, and her youngest son, Robert Walker. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Albert Green ‘A.G.’ Walker, her son and his wife Allen and Sandra Walker, her granddaughter Rebekah Walker, her grandson and wife Austin and Lauren Walker, and her great-granddaughter Verlin Walker.
Margie grew up on West 12th Street in a house her family built in 1922. After the passing of her parents Margie kept the house, and with AG they have served as landlords for many wonderful tenants over the years. Still in use today stands the walk-in sized Shirley Temple doll house her dad built for her. In her childhood there were working electric items to iron and cook with - all a part of her doll house. Today the doll house remains but has been repurposed as a laundry room.
In her high school years, Margie was both a drummer and a drum major in the marching band. She attended Austin High School (Austin), Texas High School (Texarkana), and graduated from Reagan High School (Houston). She also competed in rifle marksmanship.
Upon graduation from Reagan High, Margie attended Business College back in Austin and then worked as a legal secretary for the Texas Employment Commission (today the Texas Workforce Commission). On October 23, 1953, A.G. took leave from service in the U.S. Navy to marry Margie back in Austin. Afterwards, she joined him on base in California at Point Mugu Naval Base until A.G.’s service was concluded later that same year. Then they moved to Waco, where A.G. attended Baylor law school. Returning to Austin in 1960 and now with two children, they lived on Hancock Drive, and then in 1966 moved to Janey Drive in Allandale where they continue to have their home.
Margie was a dedicated and loving mother who supported her kids’ activities - from carpools, to Northwest Little League baseball, to Murchison Jr. High and Anderson H.S. band, Cub Scout Pack 400, Boy Scout Troop 410, and many more. For both Robert and Allen, she served at least a year each as their Den Mother for a den of neighborhood Cub Scout boys. And when her grandchildren Rebekah and Austin began their similar activities, she made every swim meet, basketball game, baseball game, and numerous other activities to see them. Finally, as the daughter of a painter and wife of a do-it-yourselfer, she and A.G. did a lot of the interior repainting as soon as Allen and Sandra moved into their Balcones Woods home.
After raising her two young boys, Margie joined A.G. as his legal secretary and remained in this role for the remainder of the law practice. As the law practice wound down, Margie and A.G. devoted time to golf, went on some cruises, traveled, and made more frequent trips to Vernon, Texas, where they own and take care of the family ranch. In Vernon, A.G.’s birth town, Margie developed friendships, worked on ranch fencing, fished on tanks at the ranch, and went wherever her dear A.G. went.
More recently, when Margie’s health started to decline, she lived with Allen and Sandra where she got to enjoy the company of their Balcones Woods friends and neighbors. She really enjoyed joining in on their Sunday night ‘driveway time’ and all their friends enjoyed having her company. For the last year and a half she resided at Silverleaf Eldercare, which has been a wonderful senior environment for her to thrive. And while A.G. would regularly come to visit her, she was always asking about, and concerned about making sure her beloved A.G. was okay.
Margie, along with her husband, attended and participated regularly in the St. John’s United Methodist Church. In addition to Sunday school and church events, Margie was a long-term member of the Postal Pro’s group that met weekly to mail out the church bulletins and socialize.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of love for Margie can be made to the St. John’s United Methodist Church of Austin or the organization of your choice.
A memorial service for Margie will be held Saturday, February 11, 2023 at 1:00 PM at St. John United Methodist Church, 2140 Allandale, Austin, Texas 78756.
