

Marion Wolford Holmes was born in McKinney, Texas on June 3, 1915 and she died at 90 years of age in Austin, Texas on April 11, 2006. Her parents were Judge and Mrs. Albert M. Wolford, now deceased. A brother, Albert M. Wolford, Jr. of Houston, Texas survives her. A brother, John L. Wolford and a sister, Eleanor Wolford Blevins are deceased. Marion married George W. Holmes of Palestine, now deceased, in Washington D.C. in 1935 and they had three sons: Albert W. Holmes of Palestine, Texas, George Michael Holmes of Sherman Oaks, California and John David Holmes of Wimberley, Texas. Marion was a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, mother-in-law, teacher/counselor, and an active church member. She served on the vestry of St. Davids Episcopal Church in Austin during the early 1980s; she was president of the Daughters of the King for the Diocese of Texas; she was president of The Women of the Church; she served on the Alter Guild; she was president of the Womens Society of Christian Service at the First Methodist Church in Palestine during the late 1940s. She was a former member of the Owl Club of McKinney, Texas and the First Baptist Church of McKinney. Marion attended George Washington University in Washington D.C. and later Sam Houston State Teachers College in Huntsville, Texas. She earned many honors over a teaching career in Palestine, Austin, McKinney and Cypress-Fairbanks School District where she served on the teacher credit union board. Her grandchildren are: John D. Holmes, Jr., Kathryn Holmes Scott, Amanda Crist Holmes, Albert W. Holmes, Jr., Franklin Ward Holmes; she has one great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Ryan Scott and two great-grandsons, Walker Steadman Holmes and John Foster Scott. Her daughters-in-law are Judith Ryan Holmes, Betty Emert Holmes and Francia W. Holmes. The pallbearers will be her male grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers will be former students Gary Valdez, Roger Seiders, Doug McIntyre, M.D., Bob Logan, Kenneth Garland, James A. Lockey and David Holbrook. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 17, 2006 at St. Davids Episcopal Church, 304 E. 7th Street in Austin. Burial services will follow at 4:00 p.m. at Pecan Grove Cemetery on South Tennessee Street in McKinney, Texas.
