Mom was born in Erie, PA and married Harry Bartel, who later became a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Air Force. As a military wife of 18 years, she had the opportunity to live in several countries, including Japan and Germany. Dad preceded Mom in death in April 1995. She is survived by her 5 children: Richard Bartel, Crofton, MD; Michael Bartel (Carol), Beaumont, TX; Timothy Bartel (Debi), Tijeras, NM; Patrick Bartel, Austin, TX and Suzanne Bartel-Barbero, Round Rock, TX. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren.
Mom enjoyed a fulfilling life, with many accomplishments. She enjoyed fundraising, including being a girl scout cookie chairman, a band mother, beep baseball for the blind and walk-a-thons for charity. In the early 70's, she became heavily involved in civil rights legislation to support the public school mainstreaming of the visually impaired. As her children grew older, she began a personally fulfilling 15 year career at Revco pharmacy.
Mom also had many passions, and bridge was one of her greatest. She was a grandmaster many times over, and played several times weekly as well as going to many tournaments. She was an avid sewer, making us jackets, shirts and ski suits. She loved dogs, and the Purple Martins who returned annually to her back yard birdhouses. Mom also was a murder mystery reader as well as an ardent Jeopardy fan, and passed on this love of reading and intellectual curiosity to us all. We treasure how special and magical she made the holidays.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your local Humane Society in Marjorie Bartel's name.
