Mark and I were neighbors on Renwick Street in Houston when we were kids, and rode the same school bus to Johnston Junior High School. We were at each others' houses a lot in those young years. 

I lost touch with Mark for many years after my family moved from that neighborhood, but we reconnected several times while I was an undergraduate student at U.T. Austin, and later when I was a graduate student there.  During the undergraduate years, I learned about Mark's battle with Hodgkins Lymphoma, which he overcame. It was undoubtedly a highly formative experience for him, representing an early brush with mortality.  He spoke about it openly and courageously, like a man unafraid of death.  

One vivid memory I have is the time I watched "The Game Of The Century" with Mark at his Austin home, his newborn son alseep in a back bedroom. When Texas pulled off a most improbable 40+ yard pass completion on 4th and 3 with only a few minutes left in the game to take a 15-14 lead over Arkansas, I was unable to  restrain a reflexive scream of joy. Mark no doubt felt some pleasure over the event - he was, after all, watching the game with his friend. However, my loud scream led him to "shush" me, hands over his lips. His foremost concern at that moment was to not awaken his infant son. That left an indelible impression on me.  We were both 20 years old at that time, and he was a married father. I felt like he was light years ahead of me in maturity.  At that point, I had never had a girl-friend.

10 years later, Mark and his mother Sybil visited me in the rent house I shared with 2 other U.T.  graduate students on Gilbert Street in Tarrytown. It was a nice get-together and time for reminiscence. I wish we had kept in touch more over the years. I never knew about his evolution towards soccer or his open heart surgery, and as a fellow survivor of open-heart surgery, we had plenty in common. I only recently learned of his passing when I looked up his name. Rest in peace old friend.

So sorry to hear this news. Mark was always willing to help, provide advice, listen and was always so committed to helping the sport of soccer in our city. He will be missed by everyone that knew him at Lonestar Soccer Club.

What a loss!! I heard about Mark's passing this past Sunday and I was stunned. Mark was like the rock of Gibraltar...timeless, wise, quietly powerful. I so much appreciated his clear thinking and his willingness to dive in to help anyone who needed him.Mark, you were a great and caring friend to many and an absolute maniac about protecting the interests of the soccer community in this town. I can't quite believe you're gone. Know that every time I take the field, I'll think of you. Godspeed, my friend. You did well. It was a pleasure to play with you  for you, and against you.
To the family..you can tell from the tributes how important Mark was to many people...know that he drew a ton of strength from your love.. Godspeed Mark, the world is measurably smaller without you, but I believe that all the good you did will bring a new Mark Gregg into our lives..

I knew Mark professionally in CME.  He was always ready to volunteer and help make things happen.  I was fortunate to work with Mark in establishing the Texas Alliance of CME many years ago.  He took the lead on this professional association and made it happen.  He will be missed and my condolances go out to his family at this time.

Mark was one of the first people I met when I joined the Wanderers soccer team in 1994, and ultimately became the team captain, as well as President of the Austin Men's Soccer Association. I got to see and play soccer within him most Sunday's throughout each year, and see his gentle, calm, "buddha-like" presence and guiding hand. His spirit will always remain with those that got to play on the field (of soccer and life) with him.

May your memories of the wonderful times you shared with your loved one comfort you and your family, today and always.

I worked with Mark at UT in the late 1970s. I think the acronym for the center then was  RASSL (Reading and Study Skills Lab).  Later I met his wife. I'm so sorry for your family's loss.  Mark was a nice guy to work with - I remember him well. May he rest in peace. With sympathy, Robin McMillion

I knew Mark from the soccer fields - we played against him and the Wanderers in the over 40 league.  Mark was always friendly, and a good opponent.

I've known Mark for many years through youth soccer. Every time I talked to him, it was always a pleasure. He was the genuine deal.  My family & I were talking the other night & everytime we see a smart car, we would get a smile & think of Mark. Our heart felt condolences go out for Marks family. He is already greatly missed.

Konnie and Family:
I was so saddened for all of you to hear of Mark's passing.  He truly was a mentor to me over the years in CME and as a colleague on the TACME Board of Directors. He had a wonderful sense of humor and I always loved hearing his soccer stories.  I believe soccer was his love of life next to his wife Konnie and his family. I will miss Mark as he truly was a mentor, friend, and a silent legend in his contributions to CME for the State of Texas, however he will not be forgotten.

I played against Mark the very first season I can remember, sometime back during the Eisenhower administration, I believe.   I remember he went through open heart surgery and came back to play the next year.  Nice guy and a raging liberal.  The world is a lesser place today.

It was an honor to know Mark.  To witness his impact as President of AMSA...  To coach youth soccer against, and eventually along side him...  And most of all to know him as a friend and mentor.  He was a rare and special man.  We would all be well served in following his example in living our lives with purpose.  God Bless Konnie, and all of Marks's family.  While Mark impacted all of us, his presence among them will be missed the most.

Mark was president of the men's soccer league when I was president of the women's league. He was always a gentleman, always willing to help, and always wonderful to talk with about soccer, family, and life.  He became a friend over the years, and I am grateful to have known him.  In addition to his gentle nature, I will always remember his devout love for his wife, children, and grandchildren.

A man to admire.  A man to emulate.  A coach, a mentor, a friend.  To me, someone who can't be replaced.  He was the definition of success - a good father, a good husband, a good friend and a damn good coach and humanitarian

Godspeed Mark. You were my Buddha and my model for a clean well-ordered life. You were our Wanderers soccer team captain from 1998. I was privileged to be your co-captain 1998-2010 and a fellow player on your team since 1987. Bless Konnie, your children and your 9 grandchildren. All of us feel an enormous void from the passing of your gentle soul. May you rest in peace -- you were always at peace. Thank you.

The good ones always go early. I had never met Mark, but his contribution to the Austin soccer community was such a positive for everyone associated. We would exchange emails every so often and he was always so helpful and willing to find a solution. We will all miss his input. RIP sir.

A great friend and mentor. Deeply saddened by the news of his passing. AMSA will be much the poorer without his always sound advice.

I always was so glad to see Mark and Connie at our grandson's soccer games and other occasions. I will miss those times with him. Conversations with Mark were always interesting as he was so knowledgeable about many subjects. His favorite subject was his family though, especially the grandkids.
He loved even those of us that were not  connected directly to the family any longer, as we all shared our love for our grandson Matthew Gregg. We were included in so many events and came to know Mark and Connie's family. All will miss him terribly. He was very special. Connie will be wonderful in keeping his memory alive. How sad I am to learn of Mark's passing. I was on the TACME Board of Directors during his presidency. He and I remained to be great friends and we communicated often. I don't know what happened to Mark, but I had no idea he was ill. He never mentioned a word. Mark is a man of integrity, honesty, and kindness. He truly wished for TACME to be the best it could be forever. His life will live on through his contributions to TACME and all other organizations he helped in his life.

It saddens me to hear of Mark's passing. He was our go to guy for TACME and website questions. It was always great to see him at our conference after his retirement. He was a generous, knowledgeable and supportive colleague. He will be missed.

It was a privilege to know Mark and work with him on the TACME Board. He modeled volunteerism from the founding of TACME to creating and maintaining the website. One of his legacies is a renowned volunteer-run state organization that mentors new CME professionals. He will be greatly missed but not forgotten.

Although I had limited contacts with him, I always thought of him as a gentleman and a knowledgeable man of character and conscience. I had much respect for him and feel sorry at his demise.
