Mary Patricia Dunphy Hoenig of Austin, Texas, formerly of Dunedin, Florida and Stony Brook, New York died on Tuesday, March 9, 2021. The first child and first daughter of John C and Bernadette Cummins Dunphy, Mary was born on July 14, 1926 in Brooklyn, New York. She attended schools in Brooklyn and spent her early childhood summers by the shore at her Grandparents’ home in Long Beach, New York. It was there that she and her Grandmother Cummins faithfully attended religious services at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church. During her later childhood years, Mary spent many summers in Mountain View, a small town in upstate New York, where she with her family and friends enjoyed the wonderful Adirondack Mountains.
As a young adult, Mary worked as a stenographer for a Wall Street company then in an attorney’s law firm. During this time, Mary became reacquainted with William Hoenig, whom she had met in the early 1930’s through the lifelong friendship of Margaret Cummins, Mary’s aunt, and Esther Hoenig, William’s mother. Serendipitously, Margaret Cummins was religious Godmother of Mary and William. On March 17, 1953, Mary and William were married in St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church, Long Beach, New York. Mary and William welcomed their five children and three grandchildren into the world.
