Mary Louise Hopson Nuhn died on August 26, 2009 in Austin, Texas. She was born on January 4, 1924 in New Braunfels, Texas to Gladys Burke Hopson and Mr. Hopson. Mary Lou attended New Braunfels High School and was a majorette for the band. After graduating she attended TSCW in Denton (now Texas Womens University). She transferred to the University of Texas in Austin in 1942. In 1944 she married her high school sweetheart, Kenneth M. Nuhn; who was then a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. They moved to Midland, Texas, where Ken was stationed at the time. They lived in Midland until Ken was transferred to Randolph Field in San Antonio where he was involved in separating people from the service in 1945 and 1946. Mary Lou worked at the base in the medical supply division. She had a similar job at Midland Army Air Field. In March of 1946, Mary Lou and Ken moved to Austin when Ken was separated from the service so that Ken could re-enter U.T. When Ken re-enrolled in the University, Mary Lou went to work for what was then The Liquor control Board as an executive secretary. She continued working there until 1951 when Ken was recalled into the Air Force. They had just built their new home and had been in it only two months when Ken had to leave for Birmingham, Alabama. He came back for her and they lived there for about a year and a half. Ken was then sent to Austin to Air Reserve Training Unit to complete his tour. They moved back into their house in 1953. Mary Lou became active in many organizations. She was a Life Member of the PTA, a Life Member and past President of the St. David's Hospital Auxiliary, which she remained active in for 32 years; a Charter Member of the Women's Architectural League; a Charter member of the Austin Calligraphic Guild, a Life Member of the U.T. Ex-Students Associations, founding member of the Eyes of Texas Giving Club, member of The President's Associates, charter member of the U.T. Littlefield Society, member of the Longhorn Foundation. Mary Lou and Ken were very active in the U.T. Ex-Students Association and served on several committees and a member of P.E.O. Chapter R. Mary Lou became a very talented calligrapher with many clients including U.T. Ex-Students Associates, St. David's Hospital, the San Antonio U.T. Ex Students Association as well as many private clients. Mary Lou is survived by her husband, Kenneth Nuhn; son, David Nuhn and wife Patricia; grandson, Ben and granddaughter, Lauren; daughter, Anne Arnold and husband Gary; grandsons, Eric and Dustin; one great-grandson. In accordance with her wishes she will be cremated. No services planned.
