She graduated from Furman University, and after graduating from Perkins School of Theology, she became part of the then Southwest Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church in 1974. Over the years she served several congregations in the South Texas area. Beyond her local responsibilities, she served in leadership capacities in the Conference most notably as chair of the Conference Board of Ministry.
One of her main emphases in ministry was contemplative worship. She taught classes and led worship services focusing on that aspect of the Christian life. She introduced many to "Loeb Shomea" where participants learned to enjoy the spiritual value of silence. She was a counselor, a spiritual director, a listening ear, and good friend.
She retired in 2010 having served ten years as Associate Pastor, or "Second Chair", as she liked to refer to it, at First United Methodist Church in Austin where she offered significant leadership and guidance. In retirement she offered to facilitate worship services and classes on grief wherever she lived.
In addition to her professional life, she enjoyed long-time friendships where she was a playful, joyful, insightful, and calming presence to all. She was a patient and loving mom, always giving and attentive to her daughter, finding new ways to enhance Rebecca's life.
She is survived by her daughter Rebecca Dowdy and her brother William Raper. Her brother Jim Raper predeceased her. Mimi will be remembered by all who knew her for the impact that she made on their lives.
A service of worship celebrating her life will take place at First United Methodist Church Austin at 2:00 p.m. February 17.
