

Mary Elizabeth Thurston, born on June 26, 1960, in Stillwater, Oklahoma, passed away on August 7, 2025, at the age of 65. Mary was beloved by many and is remembered for her wise, loyal, hard-working, generous, and kind-hearted nature.
In her early life, Mary spent a year in Strasbourg, France, from the age of 4 to 5, traveling throughout Europe and visiting numerous sights and castles. She moved to Austin in 1967 and pursued her education at Eaves, St. Stephens, University of New Mexico, and the University of Texas at Austin, where she earned her Master’s degree in Sociology.
Mary was a talented writer, artist, and historian. She authored "The Lost History of the Canine Race" and was a lifelong lover of animals, particularly dogs and cats. Her passion for animals led her to become a founding member of Animal Trustees of Austin and to serve as the historian and curator at Hartsdale Pet Cemetery, the oldest cemetery for beloved pets in the United States, located in Hartsdale, New York.
Mary was known for her sharp mind, large sense of humor, and vast intellectual knowledge. Her legacy is one of generosity and kindness, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
A Memorial Service will be held on October 2, 2025, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, followed by a Catered Reception from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm.
