Mary Gail Waguespack

Mary Gail Waguespack, born August 19, 1953 in Houston, Texas, passed away on June 21, 2026. The daughter of Earl Clinton Downey and Madeleine Lou Smith, she was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and teacher who was known for her playful and giving spirit.

As a Physical Education teacher for over 30 years, primarily at St. Ignatius Catholic School and Patton Elementary in Austin, Texas, she approached life with a sense of play. Whether it was wading in Caney Creek with her siblings, unscrambling words on road trips, playing a game of Spoons at Christmas, or playing catch with grandchildren, Mimi made everything a game.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Madeleine Lou Smith; her father, Earl Clinton Downey; and her beloved side-kick brother, Earl “Bo” Downey Jr.

Mary is survived by her devoted husband, George Waguespack Jr.; her siblings, Chaille Walsh, Lana Crawford, Donna Mancuso, John Downey, and Roxanne Randolph; and her three children and their families: Erinn Windler (spouse Andrew Windler, and children Simon, Miles, and Dorothy), Kelly Waguespack (spouse Garland Williams, and children George and John), and Caitlin Waguespack (children Olivia and Isabella).

A private graveside service will be held.
