Mary Margaret Werkenthin died peacefully at 11:53 PM, March 13, 2004 from a lengthy illness. Mary Margaret (aka MM) was born on Thanksgiving Day, during the Texas-Texas A&M game at the Scott and Gregg clinic on 7th and Brazos, at which both her dad and granddad practiced medicine. Her parents were Isabel Hutchins Gregg and Dr. Francis Banner Gregg. The Greggs were later blessed with two more children, Dr. Frank Hutchins Gregg and Francis Banner Gregg, Jr. The Gregg Family lived at 2100 Parkway, just west of Pease Park. Mary Margaret attended Pease Elementary School, Allen Junior High, and Austin High School. She graduated from Austin High School in 1945. She then attended the University of Texas where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She was a member of The Junior League of Austin and The Settlement Home of Austin. She was an avid tennis player until her disease forced her to quit playing. She also loved to fish, especially at Port Aransas. The record is absent of any fishing trips on which her husband caught more fish than MM. In 1947, she married Fred Bernard Werkenthin. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Francis Banner Gregg, Jr., her grandparents, Dr. Frank Cousins and Rebecca Gregg and William and Maybelle Hutchins. She is survived by her husband, Fred B. Werkenthin, her daughter, Linda Hawkins and husband Ron, her son, Fred Jr. and wife Debbie, her daughter, Becky Nugent and husband Bill, her son, Gregg and wife Shannon, and her brother, Dr. Frank Hutchins Gregg and wife Beverly. Her grandchildren are Zac Caldwell, Leslie and Marc Nugent, Fred III, Margaret, Sam and Grace Werkenthin, and Melissa, Logan, and Natalie Brown. The family wishes to extend its appreciation to Dr. Sean Gilbey of Austin, Drs. Fernando Torres and Clyde Yancey of Dallas, as well as the staff of South Austin Hospital, particularly Lea, Rex, Randall, and Margaret, for their care for MM. MM suffered from primary pulmonary hypertension, an extremely rare disease, particularly for someone her age. Neither the cause nor the cure for primary pulmonary hypertension is known. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the St. Paul Fund for Advanced Heart & Lung Disease in Dallas for the support of research regarding pulmonary hypertension. Donations can be sent to 5909 Harry Hines Boulevard, Dallas, Texas 75235. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 19, 2004 in the chapel at Weed Corley Fish Funeral Home.
