
Mary Jean White died in Austin, Texas on Friday, June 24, 2005, after a long illness. The only child of Jake and Lou Prince, she was born in Wichita Falls on April 28, 1927, but she spent most of her childhood in Burkburnett and Lone Oak, Texas. She attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock. She moved to Austin in 1950 when her husband, John C. White, was elected Commissioner of Agriculture. While her children were growing up, she was deeply involved in their activities, having served as a Cub Scouts den mother, and having supported her sons Little League and school activities. She also was active in the Junior Helping Hand and state politics, being elected president of the State Official Wives Club. She later retired from the Office of the State Comptroller after several years of notable state service. Ms. White was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Jake Rayburn White; and her former husband. She is survived by her cousin Mary Lou Melton of Rowlett, Texas; sons, John Richard White and his wife, Ann Hardy-White, and Edward White, of Austin; grandsons Russell White, Will White, Brandon White, and Dustin White and his wife, Melissa. Family members especially thank the excellent staff at Brighton Gardens of Austin Assisted Living Center and A-Med Community Hospice. The family will receive visitors from 6:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 28, at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar Blvd., Austin.
