

Matias was born on February 24, 1921 to Porfiria Martinez and Gilberto Velasquez in McNeil, Texas, the fourth of five sons. He was predeceased by his parents, brothers Roy, Julian, Santiago and Pete and by his true love Susie; their son, George; two grandchildren, Francis Xavier and Isabel Therese. He died April 21, 2008. Matias loved music. During World War II he proudly served in the Aleutian Islands and also entertained the troops as a singer and guitarist in the service bands. He had a dance band known as the Latinaires in the 1940s, 50s and 60s in Austin and was honored by the Austin Latino Music Association as an Idolo for his contributions to the Austin music scene. He was also honored as a member of the Latino Legends of Austin. As a life long member of St. Mary Cathedral he sang in the original men's choir for over 25 years. He loved children and was an example and friend to not only his own children but to all children. He was a skilled carpenter and finally supported his family as cab driver #175 for Roy's Taxi, which was a Velasquez family business in Austin for 75 years. He is survived by his children Charles Flores, Yolanda Velasquez, Barbara Rivera, Michael Velasquez Sr (Josie), Frank Velasquez (Elsa), Geraldine Stewart (Jim), Monica Larson; his 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Recitation of the Rosary will be Wednesday April 23, 2008, at 7:00 p.m. at Wilke-Clay-Fish funeral home, 2620 S. Congress. Mass of Resurrection will be held Thursday, April 24, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. St. Mary Cathedral, 203 E. 10th Street, with interment following at Assumption Cemetery.
