Born May 23, 1925, in Rockdale, Texas, to Joe and Victoria Davenport, the oldest of 7, Maudie graduated from Austin High School in Austin, Texas. She received her nursing degree at Johns Hospital in Taylor, Texas as an LVN.
Maudie worked at Southwestern Bell, ran a daycare from her residence, was a jailer for the Austin Police Department, a business owner of Lee’s Nearly New shop and served numerous Assisted Living facilities as an LVN. Maudie retired to her home in 1987.
Maudie lived in the Austin area throughout her life where she raised her daughter Cecelia. She loved to meet new people, go dancing (cut-a-rug), travel, collect Oriental décor and was very active with her church community. She was a Sunday School Teacher and President of her class. She enjoyed cooking/baking for her family and friends and looked forward to the Rockdale Family Reunion each year. She was well dressed for any occasion and kept her hair dark red, which gave her the nickname “Red”. She was spirited, loved her family and spent many hours reading her Bible and loving the Lord. She was a member of the Red Hatters Association and Bannockburn Baptist Church in Austin.
She is preceded in death by her parents Joe and Victoria and siblings Joe, Virgil, Jimmy, Ruby and Dorothy. She is survived by her daughter Cecelia Wilson and husband Maurice. She also leaves behind her granddaughters Rebecca Johnson and husband Brian, Vanessa Spurlock and husband Earl and Veronica Hughes and husband Josh; great-grandchildren David Spurlock, Robert Spurlock, Jonathan Spurlock, Kara Spurlock, Ashley Johnson, Caleb Hughes, Benjamin Hughes, and Caroline Hughes. She will also be missed by her sister Lou Davenport-Hardin and numerous nieces and nephews. A special appreciation to Southwood Care Center for her care.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Thursday, July 16, 2015 at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be at 1:00 P.M., Friday, July 17, 2015 in the Chapel of Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home with Pastor Chuck Davis officiating. Interment will follow at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Memorial Park.
