Garf was born and raised in Chicago. It was there that he met the love of his life, Renee, with whom he was married for 66 years. Their love for each other and dedication to their family is an inspiration to all who know them.
Garf was a graduate of Northwestern University with a BS in Business Administration. After 2 years in the army, he began his career which included working in medical and hospital equipment sales, teaching evening classes at Northwestern University, working as a sales editor for national trade publications and being a regular contributor and lecturer for the American Management Association.
It was not long before Garf decided that he wanted to pave his own way so he started his own company, Persuasive Communications. His sales and management company grew to be one of the most successful of its kind, working with large companies both in the US and abroad. Garf loved his career because it gave him the opportunity to help people become better every day. One of his many “Garfisms” was “Some people like to grow flowers, I like to grow people.” In later years, Garf was known to say “I am failing miserably at retirement”. He needed to be helping people and in 2010, he wrote the book Persuasive Communication: Get What you Want without a Gun! so he could continue to help people in the years to come.
Garf was predeceased by his father I. Gordon Garfield, mother Lillian M. Garfield and sister Roberta C. Garfield. He is survived by his beloved wife Renee B. (nee Croft) Garfield; their devoted daughters Janice (Jack) Lehman, Loni (John) Becker; loving grandchildren Emily Garfield Becker, Lisa (Cameron) Brown, Kevin Lehman, Jared Becker and Anna Becker; and great-grandsons Gideon Brown and Elliott Garfield Brown.
Private family services will be held.
