Melanie grew up in Austin and graduated from Anderson High School before attending Stephen F. Austin University, where she was a proud member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. She later built a career in finance, but her true passions always shone through—family, fitness, laughter, and connection.
She loved Bikram yoga, working out, and living a healthy lifestyle. Her sharp wit and big, joyful laugh filled every room, and she never met a stranger. Melanie had a way of listening deeply, offering support, and making everyone feel heard. Many who knew her joked that she should have been a lawyer because of her quick mind and persuasive charm.
Above all, Melanie’s greatest pride and joy were her two children, Berkeley Rose Wheatley (21) and Bowen Grey Wheatley (17). She adored them and poured her heart into being their mom. She also held a soft spot for her pets—her dogs Ollie and Coco who were with her through many years, and most recently her young Siamese cats, Lulu and Crue, who brought her endless comfort and joy. We also mourn the loss of Coco, pictured here with her.
She is survived by her loving parents, John and Susan Horton; her sister, Kim Mathis Wolle, and husband, Drew Wolle and her adored nieces, Harper and Heather, her brother, Samuel Mathis and his wife Melissa along with niece and nephew, Lucy and Maverick. She also leaves behind her children, Berkeley and Bowen, along with extended family and many dear friends who will carry her memory forward.
Her family and friends will always remember her radiant smile, generous heart, and unwavering love. As Melanie takes her next journey, we send her off with the music she loved. In the words of one of her favorite bands, may she always “fade into the comforting sound” that carried her through life.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills, located at 9700 Anderson Mill Road, Austin, TX 78750, on December 6, 2025, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
