

Merl Douglas Jackman, 64, a long time resident and optometrist in Austin, passed away on July 15, 2016 at St. David’s North Austin Medical Center. Dr. Jackman was born in French Lick, Indiana, on November 12, 1951. He married his high school sweetheart, Deborah Knabel, on January 2, 2010 and together they have 4 children and 6 grandchildren.
Dr. Jackman loved his work as an optometrist, his patients, his business associates, and his incredible staff. After graduating from Indiana University School of Optometry, he began his career in Austin in 1977. Dr. Jackman was chairman of the board at Texas State Optical, a founding member of Eye Lasik Austin, and owner of M.D. Jackman OD & Associates on North Lamar.
Dr. Jackman was devoted to his family and loved golfing. He was also a devoted and caring friend to an extraordinary number of people who spanned his entire life.
Dr. Jackman was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Jackman. Survivors include his father, Drexell Jackman; brother, Dan (Karen) Jackman; and sister, Dinah Sue Jackman, all of French Lick, Indiana. He is also survived by his wife, Deborah “Nonnie” Jackman; his daughters: Lauren (Jordan) Woolf of Fort Worth TX and Sarah (Graham) Carpenter of Austin TX; stepson: Jason (Rachel) Visner of Muskego WI; stepdaughter: Jessica Visner of Venice FL; grandchildren: Nolan Woolf, Parker Woolf, Easton Carpenter, Katie Visner, Caden Visner, and Aldyn Visner.
A celebration of his life will be held at his office in Austin. The arrangements are pending. Funeral Services will be held at his hometown in French Lick, Indiana.
