Dr. Jackman was my eye doctor for a long time. He was a true professional and a good hearted person. I just found out when setting up my appointment today August04, 2017. He will be missed.

Such a sweet man! He was my eye doctor for about 12 years and was an amazing doctor. He will be missed. :(

Dr. Jackman was a soft spoken, kind-hearted man, who always had a smile for his patients. He would chat with you, and ask about your life, not just about your eyes. I am shocked and saddened to learn of his passing.
 
In the early 90's I worked at a print shop downtown. Dr. Jackman was one of our customers, and had an office across the street from us. We made his business cards, prescriptions pads, etc. When I needed help with my vision I went to see Dr. Jackman. His office has moved 2 or 3 times since I first became a patient, but I was glad to follow him wherever he moved. I have trusted my eyes to no one else for the past 26 years! My son and mother-in-law also became his patients.
 
We were all blessed to have known him. Our heart-felt condolences go out to his family and friends, and his wonderful staff and fellow patients.  Dr. Jackman will truly be missed.

So sorry to hear this.  He and I were classmates at Indiana.  We were not close friends, but it was clear that he would be a very successful and well liked optometrist.

Dr Jackman was one of the first people I met when I moved to Austin 25 years ago.  He was the finest eye care I've ever experienced.  He was there to calm me at midnight the night before I had Lasik scheduled and assured me it would be ok. That next day, he held my hand throughout the procedure performed by his colleague who I knew would be the best if approved by Dr. Jackman.

Every visit he lit up like a Christmas tree discussing his two beautiful daughters and I did discussing my only child, Chase.

The happiest I ever saw him was when he returned from his high school reunion and re-met Debi.  Clearly, his last years were some of his happiest which I loved seeing.

I'm still so shocked as I was about to book an appointment.  There will never be a replacement for me.....only alternatives.

If there is a service in Austin, I would love to attend.

Dr. Jackman provided care to my daughters and me for many years.  I so appreciated his gentle demeanor and kindness over the years.  My condolences to his family and friends and to his colleagues.  He will be missed.

A little over ten years ago, when I was hugely pregnant with my first daughter, I had my first visit to Dr. Jackman.  I was struck by his gentleness and quiet calm.  And then all of a sudden he told me how he'd just seen the penguin documentary, and talked about the penguins sitting on the eggs and taking care of their babies.  It was then that I also realized he was a big sweetheart.  Over the years, during my annual eye exams I always loved hearing about Dr. Jackman's family vacations, about his daughters and step-kids, and his grandchildren.  I felt much affection for him.  He was just my eye doctor, but I cared about Dr. Jackman, and I am so saddened by his passing.  So many people will miss him very much.  My sincerest condolences to all of his loved ones.

Dr. Jackman held my hand through two lasik surgeries. He was a wonderful doctor and friend. Dr. Jackman took wonderful care of every member of our family and will be sorely missed. I will keep his family in my prayers.

Doug was my best friend and neighbor in the early 50's, even coming to Kentucky after we moved to visit me. We lost contact over the years, but I never lost my love for him and his family as they are wonderful people. I am so glad I had the opportunity to know this soul.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Dr. Jackman's passing. I have been a patient of his since the 1980s. He was always so personable and pleasant. He never made me feel like just another appointment. I got my husband to start going to him, too, and Dr. Jackman was the only doctor I never had to browbeat him to see! We will miss Dr. Jackman very, very much. Gary and I send our deepest sympathy and condolences to the family.

 Dr Jackman was the first optometrist I saw as an adult, and that was at least at least 30 years ago.  His  little smile and twinkle in his eyes and his sense of humor are characteristics I remember most keenly--and his gentle caring. He was one of a kind, and think of him often and fondly.  He seemed much to young to leave us. I'll remember him fondly.

He was my eye doc for 20 years - lovely man.  And I only went to see him because we have the same last name!  He'll be missed greatly.

We feel blessed to have had Dr. Jackman as our doctor. What a truly talented and caring doctor he was. Our whole family will miss him terribly. Our hearts go out to his family and wonderful staff at this difficult time.

My son and I were patients of Dr. Jackman for over 15 years.  He was a patient, thorough, and very attentive doctor.  He never acted rushed during an eye exam and always thoroughly explained the results.  During my eye exam last summer, Dr. Jackman talked  lovingly about his kids and grandkids. My prayers go out to all his family and friends.  He was surely be missed by all of his patients.

I have been a patient of Dr. Jackman's since I was 14 years old, and am now less than two weeks shy of my 40th birthday. Dr. Jackman gave me more than just the gift of sight, but also self-esteem! Being a nerdy teenager with thick eyeglasses and braces can be difficult, and enabling me to wear contact lenses made a very positive change in my life. I appreciate his patience, caring, and jovial demeanor. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, co-workers, and patients.

We met Merl in the late 70s.  Always a very nice guy; always a pleasure to visit with over the years. He constantly had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eyes.  Last time I saw him was the day before he began his treatment. He was anxious to get it going so he could move on.

Dr. Jackman was able to quickly spot an eye condition that others had missed. He was always thorough and professional but more than that he was genuinely interested in his patients as people. His passing is quite a loss to the Austin community.

This is a sad loss. Dr. Jackman was a thread woven into the fabric of our community. Indeed, every visit was like I was the only client.  But, I knew there were others. My friends also were patients. We all shared some story about the extra service he did for us and those small everyday conversations that carried over from each visit. Always professional, but he took the time to enjoy a moment of connection. He touched lives and his impact will live long.

Two years ago, I had severe corneal abrasion in both my eyes, and that was how I met Dr. Jackman. Most corneas heal themselves in 48 hours, but it took an entire month for me. Dr. Jackman was extremely patient, jovial, and kind throughout this entire process. He is one of the most dedicated doctors I have known and he will be missed dearly.

I only had the pleasure of being seen and meeting Dr. Jackman recently  as a new patient. He made me feel comfortable instantly with his great smile. I was very impressed. I am so thankful to have known Dr. Jackman for 17+ years and I'm unbelievably saddened by the news of his passing. I have been a patient for over 20 years.  Started bringing my girls to see him every year with me about 5 years ago.  Always such a calm gentle presence.  Will miss our annual visits.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I started going to see him at least 20 years ago and each time I saw him he never seemed rushed and treated me as if I was his only patient. He always had the time to talk to me about his family or other non vision related matters and it seemed like we always shared some kind of joke during our session. What can I say.  Dr. Jackman, to date was the most personable, authentic and considerate doctor I ever had.  I looked forward to my annual visit with him and his amazing staff.  I always felt welcomed and cared for.  Dr. Jackman actually returned my call when I was on a remote island in Maine dealing with a painful eye due to a contact lens being worn too long.  He told me what I needed and fortunately someone had the exact eye drops.  I called him back to thank him and to let him know I felt much better.  Now I know that his kindness and integrity was something he lived everyday in his practice, with his family and friends.

I am grateful to have known him and send my loving prayers to his family, friends and staff. I am so very sorry for your loss. He will be missed.

I am very sad to learn about Dr. Jackman's passing. He was my optometrist for over 20 years (since I was in college). I always looked forward to my yearly exams because it gave us an opportunity to catch up. He was a very caring doctor and person. Doug (Merl) first cared for my eyes in 1991, and everyone I've recommended to him remained in his care because he was committed to their health, comfort, and clear vision.  I especially loved hearing about his ski-trips and reunions with school mates and friends as he travelled around the country.  Doug taught me about what customer care really means --- sometimes on weekends for an urgency, sometimes by text-response proving he's up to date and always engaged.  2010 was a real boost to his spirits --- new love and life.   To his wife Deborah, family and children, and professional peers and staff --- I know only a fraction of the loss you feel, but we join together to keep his memory and wisdom alive. I was very heartbroken to hear of Dr. Jackmans passing. He was my first boss in the optical industry. 30 years ago!!! He hired me with no experience because he said he believed in my abilities. I will always be thankful for that. He was a wonderful boss. He will be missed. Prayers to his family.

My daughter and Sarah have known each other since pre-K, so we have been lucky to know Doug both personally and professionally. What was so obvious to our family was his deep love for his daughters. He was a great friend to our family, especially to our daughter. One year, while at camp, she developed an eye infection, so he met us with meds to take to her. Another time when she cut her cornea he counseled us on what to do. He probably regrets giving us his cell number! Our family is stunned by his passing. Our knowing that God is holding his family in the palm of his hand is reassuring. Love to Sarah and Lauren and their families.

I have been Dr. Jackman's patient for 15 years. As others have said, I was catching up with a friend while he checked my eyes. I will always remember the twinkle in his eye when he told me about marrying his sweetheart in 2010. He was so happy. My prayers are with his family.

Dr. Jackman has been the optometrist for both of my daughters. He treated them with Ortho-K therapy.  Dr. Jackman was a very nice and dedicated person.  One of My daughter had difficulty during the Ortho-K therapy. He spent a lot of time to help her and even made effort to see my daughter in early morning on Saturday. I was shocked to hear that Dr. Jackman passed away.  We will miss you!

Dr Jackman was my Optometrist since he had his practice in the Highland Mall, many years ago.  His demenior and professionalism was extraordinary. Being a private pilot he was concerned about my safety  and paid special attention to make sure that I had good vision to fly safely.
I will truly miss him because he was such a good person to know.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Dr. Jackman went out of his way to take care of my family and me for over 20 years but recently he went beyond the call of duty to help when I had a serious eye issue. He was a kind gentleman and he will be missed.

He got her into contact lenses and she never had a problem, because she knew she could count on him no matter what. Her very first visit was on Congress Avenue in Austin, TX. 
I am sure you will hear many wonderful stories about him and they are all true. Gratitude is a virtue that helps us remember the great qualities of someone. He was a great man.

I am so sad to hear about Dr. Jackman. I have been a patient of his for over 25 years. I remember how he used to work 7 days a week with appointments at Highland Mall and his location in Round Rock. We would visit once a year during my appointment and catch up with family news. He was more like a friend to me than just my optometrist. My sincerest condolences to his family and his "work family" - we will all miss him.

My husband and I were patients of Dr. Jackman for over 20 years.  We always looked forward to our visits with him where we could catch up on family events and swap basketball team tales.  Dr. Jackman identified my mother's diabetes through an eye exam 9 years ago and connected us with a team of doctors that have helped her maintain her vision and her health.  I will always be grateful for Dr. Jackman's diligence in his care for her.  We will miss our annual chats with him.  He exemplified a caring medical professional. Dr. Jackman was a thoughtful and skilled optometrist for me for 15 years. My best memory: my son had a friend who was orphaned in his late teens. He was studying photography but had vision problems and needed correction. I told Dr. Jackman his story and made arrangements to pay for his exam and glasses. Dr. Jackman would never let me pay for this young man's care, despite my asking several times. He was a very kind man.

I had a chance to know Dr Jackson when I took my son to see him for OK lenses 4 years ago. He has great knowledge and are so friendly to patients! We certainly will miss him.

I started seeing Dr. Jackman in 1991, and had an appointment with him on his last day to work before he took his time off. My daughter and granddaughters would drive 4.5 hours to see him. He even met me at this office one Saturday after his girl's soccer game to follow up on my eye that I had scratched real badly. We would sometimes spend more time catching up with what was going on with our families than the actual exam would take. He was certainly one in a million and will be greatly missed.  My heart does out to his family, friend, staff and patients..

Dr. Jackman was such an excellent doctor.  He treated everyone with great kindness and respect.  I truly will miss him and express my condolences to his family and friends.

My wife and I were so sad to see that Dr. Jackman had passed away. In 2006, I suddenly lost clear vision in my right eye. Scared to death I was having a stroke or worse, I called Dr. Jackman. He saw me immediately, carefully assessed me and told me I'd had an ocular migraine (no big deal). Talking about being there for your patients. I also remember him holding my wife's hand during her Lasix procedure, which she was a little worried about. A compassionate man, a life well lived. We will truly miss him.

So sorry for your loss.  Dr. Jackman was my optometrist from when I arrived in Austin 30 years ago to the present.  We always had a laugh together on every visit, and he was always genuinely interested in catching up with things in my life. He was a kind man.  I will miss him.

Merl was my neighbor once, and my optometrist for many years.  I always looked forward to my annual eye exam, just to shoot the bull with him.  He really gave it to me when I first needed bifocals.  I said, It's weird, all of a sudden I can't see things up close.  He said, Not all that weird...you're OLD!!  We had a good laugh over that every visit thereafter.  He will be missed.

We lost a very good man and a very good Dr. Dr. Jackman has been our opthamologist for at least 21 years. He truly cared about his patients. After our home burned down, he met us at the office and gave me six months worth of contacts, no charge. When we were building the house, Bruce got something in his eye. We called him, and he met us at his office at 9 PM to check Bruce's eye and clean it out. How awesome was that? He could have just said go to the emergency room. He always had a hug (for the girls!) and a handshake, and a kind word. He always remembered you, and your family and asked about them. He will be greatly missed.

I am so sad to hear of the passing of such a kind man and great optometrist.   Last time I was in the office, I asked him about a family picture taken on the beach, and he talked about his family with such joy and pride.  He struck me as someone who had a deep appreciation for the gifts in his life.

I always looked forward to seeing Dr. Jackman every year for my eye exam.  He was such a kind and positive person, and I loved that he would talk openly about his faith.  I will miss him very much - no one will compare to him.  My prayers are with his family and friends that God will comfort them with their sweet memories of him and the knowledge that he is now in the presence of God!

Dr. Jackman was my optometrist for over a decade and I only saw him once a year, but he made an impact on my life.  He was always kind and professional, but he also offered me sincere and thoughtful advice on life in general that helped me greatly.  I want his family and friends to know that he made an impression even upon those of us who did not get the opportunity to know him better.  He will be missed and remembered with great fondness.

We traveled from northwest Austin to see him because he was a great doctor and we trusted him. His type of professionalism and trustworthiness is difficult to find nowadays in the medical profession. In addition, we enjoyed catching up with family news during our visits and you could tell how much he loved his children and family. We will miss him. May he rest in peace.

Dr. Jackman was the optometrist for our entire family. He was always patient and kind with my children. He counseled and helped me through several problems with my eyes. He was always there for us, no matter what time of the day or night. Our sympathies and prayers are with Dr. Jackman's family; he was a great man, kind and compassionate, and will be very much missed.

I have been going to Dr. Jackman for a few years and the thing I liked the most was his "bedside manner" and how he could make you feel so comfortable. My thoughts to his family, we will miss him very much.

Our family had the good fortune of knowing Dr. Jackman both professionally, as our optometrist and personally through our children at Westlake High School.  Doug was always upbeat, honest and kind.  He seemed just as interested in what was going on in OUR life as his own. He shared pictures and stories about those new grandbabies and was overjoyed about being a granddad. Our family will really miss him and his wonderful warm personality.   We want his family to know that we are holding them close in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. I started seeing Dr. Jackman when his office was at One American Center and continued when he moved his practice to Lamar.  He was such a kind man and always made me feel comfortable.  He will be missed.
