Raised in Kerrville, Texas, as a graduate of Tivy High School, he soon left the Hill Country to serve his country as a pilot in the United States Air Force. He served for 22 years reaching the rank of Lt. Col. and becoming a wing commander at Vance Air Force base in Enid, OK. As both a fighter pilot and flight instructor, he received service ribbons for both the Korean and Vietnam Wars as well as earning his Command Pilot Wings, having logged over 3000 hours of military flight time.
In the fall of 1972, after retiring from military service and moving his family to Austin, he exchanged his pilot cockpit for an 8th grade life science classroom at Bedichek Jr. High in the Austin ISD. He remained a bit of a fixture at Bedichek as the “school photographer,” as well as Science department chair, for the next 15 years. He retired from the classroom in 1987.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy Doyle Stevens and Homer Newton Stevens, both of Kerrville, and by his wife Verginia Henniger Stevens. He is survived by his two sons, Russell Stevens and Alan Stevens of Austin, his daughter in law Susan Stevens, his two grandchildren Christopher and Kathleen and his brother and his wife Jack and Francis Stevens of Kerrville.
At his request, there will be no formal remembrance ceremony. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his name to your favorite public school library.
