

Michael Sander Lt. Col. USAF (Ret) Michael Sander, age 90, of Austin, Texas passed away after a long illness, on Wednesday, August 31, 2005. He was born on November 29, 1914 in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania to John and Mary Cap, immigrants from the Ukraine. He is preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Brudler Sander. They were married for 29 loving years. Michael earned a Bachelors in Science in Business from the University of Pittsburgh, in 1949. He also earned a Masters of Business Administration from Syracuse University in 1957. As a self made man, he was very proud of his educational accomplishments and greatly valued the empowerment his education provided him. Michael proudly served in the United States Air Force for 32 years until his retirement in December 1974. He enjoyed taking Russian, Spanish and German classes for personal enrichment at the University of Texas and Austin Community College. He was an enthusiastic life long learner. Michael followed politics and always prided himself in voting a straight Democratic ballot. Michael was an avid golfer and continued playing throughout his eighty-ninth year. He enjoyed playing several times a week at his favorite Bergstrom AFB golf course and in later years the Jimmy Clay and Bluebonnet courses. He participated in numerous tournaments across the country. Michael is survived by his daughter, Vanessa Elizabeth Gustafson and husband Bruce Alan Gustafson; and son, Dr. Hans Michael Sander and wife Elizabeth Boles Sander; grandchildren, Catherine Elizabeth Gustafson, David Michael Gustafson, Claire Elizabeth Sander, and Andrew Michael Sander all of Austin. Michael was generous, selfless and giving to others in need. His presence will be sorely missed by all who loved and knew him. Visitation will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, September 2, 2005, at Wilke-Clay-Fish Funeral Home with the Funeral service to follow at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at 1:30 p.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas, with full military honors.
