Myra Lynn Shavers, 69, of Austin, Texas passed away on June 27, 2016 surrounded by her family. Myra was born on June 7, 1947, to Ruby and Henry Shavers in Austin at the old Seton Hospital – she was a real native Austinite. Her parents preceded her in death in 1990. To all who knew her, she was a kind woman who touched many lives and loved her daughter, Cristin, fiercely.
Myra graduated from Southwest Texas State University in 1969, and ended up working in both the Athletic and the Legal Counsel Department at the same University for more than 30 years. She lived in San Marcos for almost 35 years before returning to Austin in 2014.
Myra battled cancer bravely and hard for the past 10 years, complaining very little – but suffering a lot. She had a stem cell transplant in September 2014 from which she never fully recovered. Special thanks to Dr. Verstosek and Dr. Popat at MD Anderson in Houston for their care. She was also very appreciative of the caregivers that helped her through her first months post-transplant (Cristin, Debbie, Jennifer, Lana, Mickey, Phyllis, Sherrie, Mabel and Jenny) and to Beth and family who took care of her beloved cat Piper.
Myra is survived by her daughter, Cristin Caldwell (Austin); sister, Lana Estill and husband Steve; niece Lindsay; nephew Adam; and grandniece, Abigail and grandnephew, Flynn. She is also survived by her beloved Aunt Mabel, who stepped in as “Mom” when her parents died. She leaves behind many more uncles, cousins, and friends that meant a lot to her throughout her life
Myra loved her family, her cats (too many to mention), and considered her “hobbies” as shopping and watching TV. Her favorite trip was to go to Fredericksburg each year to pick peaches. She loved her peaches…
A Celebration of Myra’s life will be on Saturday, July 2, at 1:30 p.m. at the Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home. There will be a reception following at the Estill’s home in Buda, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Myra’s name to M.D. Anderson (The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Box 4486, Houston, TX 77210-4486) or to Immanuel Lutheran Church in LaVernia, Texas (P.O. Box 168, LaVernia, TX 78121).
