Nancy Kelly Anderson, 85, passed away on May 24, 2026, in Austin, Texas. Born July 1, 1940, Nancy was the daughter of D. Everett Kelly and Ruth Rosile Benedict. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and wife to Owen Wade Anderson, and she carried through life a steady devotion to family, a generous spirit, and a sincere regard for the dignity of every person—especially the young and the vulnerable.
Nancy attended Stephen F Austin High School and completed her undergraduate studies at UT Austin, later continuing her education with graduate work at UT Austin with a Master of Fine Arts. Her love of learning never narrowed with time; it widened. She sought understanding across differences and delighted in the ways people, ideas, and communities could be brought into closer connection.
For many years, Nancy served on the board of Junior Helping Hand Home for Children and on the board of the Austin Symphony League. She also lectured at UT Austin in continuing education, while teaching middle school visual art at St. Andrew's Episcopal School. Her days were filled with the work of making and building—touring folk festivals, playing music with her band, studying astronomy, participating in book clubs and Bible studies, and creating art of her own. She approached each interest with the same thoughtful attention and quiet resolve, as if curiosity itself were a form of care.
When Nancy saw a need, she did not stand back. She stepped forward. Through her work with the Helping Hand Home for Children, she supported the creation of Eliason House to ensure continued care for teenagers, and at one point even enlisted a local biker group to build a playscape for the home’s young residents. She also found deep purpose in her leadership within Austin’s art community, including her passion for Laguna Gloria’s Fiesta and Austin's Safari.
Nancy’s sense of wonder extended beyond the immediate world. She loved the mysteries of life and beyond, as well as science and astronomy—captured, for decades, by a poster of Einstein tacked to the kitchen ceiling. She held space for questions, for discovery, and for reverence, often meeting life’s differences with a smile, a giggle, and a simple, expansive reply: “Doesn’t that just make God bigger?”
More than anything, Nancy loved her family. She was an excellent mother and grandmother, and she carried a deep sense of adventure—traveling to new places with friends, her daughters, and her granddaughter, always attentive to the connections found in art, music, culture, and beloved humanity. She also held a special adoration for The Great Willie Nelson, a fondness many will remember with warmth.
Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, Wade Anderson, and her parents D. Everett and Ruth Rosile Kelly. She is survived by her daughters Natasha Katherine Anderson and Hollyana Anderson Melear. Her granddaughter Chloe Analise Melear and her brother Robert Catfish Kelly.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 5416 Parkcrest Drive, Austin, Texas 78731, on June 5, 2026, from 11:00 am. A Graveside Service will follow at Austin Memorial Park on June 5, 2026, from 12:00 pm.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the many friends who surrounded Nancy with steadfast companionship, including her remarkable circle of childhood friends, some spanning more than eight decades. Special thanks are also offered to Family Tree Austin for their attention and care over the past decade, and to Blue Water Hospice for their impeccable care during the final year of Nancy’s life, as well as to all who went the extra mile to ensure that love was felt, shared, and enduring.
