

Nancy was born on 7 January 1928 in North Carolina to Ralph and Katherine (Fulton) Norwood. By the age of 12, she’d lost her hearing due to a combination of Menier’s disease and Scarlet Fever. She was raised by her maternal grandmother in Mount Airy, North Carolina, the small town made famous as Mayberry RFD. Most of her early years were spent in various schools for the deaf.
She married her first husband, Stephen Stefanou in 1948. After the birth of Stephen and George, Steve joined the Air Force and spent the next 20 years on various AF bases. In 1971, while stationed in Austin, TX at Bergstrom AFB, Steve, now a Lt Colonel, died. Nancy spent the last 53 years in Austin. She remarried Jacob Decker in 1988 and enjoyed their lives together until he died in 2004.
Nancy loved the Lord Jesus Christ. Her memories are as a young girl, walking barefoot down a dirt road to worship Him on Sunday’s. After Steve’s death, Nancy became one of the original members of Dayspring Fellowship under the leadership of Jackson Boyett. After his and his wife, Barbara’s untimely deaths, she became increasingly homebound yet never stopped loving Jesus.
Nancy loved the beauty of God’s creation. Her talent for painting was one of the joy's of her life, even after her eyesight had faded. God always enabled her to compensate for her deafness and later blindness. She never considered herself to be handicapped.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Joe and Buddy, and her sister, Betty. Also preceding her are her two husbands, Steve Stefanou and Jacob Decker, along with her special friend Edd Redd. Surviving her are her two sons, Stephen Stefanou and Stefan Georg (Mari), along with her two granddaughters Sydney and Lily Georg.
Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2024 at 11:00a.m. in the Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral home at 5416 Parkcrest Dr. Austin, TX 78731. After the service, the casket will be transported to Mount Airy, North Carolina for burial in the family
