Ever the Southern gentleman, Neil was born in Alexandria, Virginia. Most of his youth and high school years were spent in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Neil attended the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, and graduated with a Bachelors of Business Administration.
He moved to the Washington, DC area in 1977 and worked for Service Master, followed by a stint working for a general contractor in Maryland. During this time, he met up with a fellow William and Mary graduate, Janet Moscicki, who was also living in the area. Neil was as persistent in pursuing this relationship as he would later be in his sales career. Neil and Janet were married at Saint Ambrose Catholic Church in Annandale, Virginia, on December 6, 1980. They taught religious education to a confirmation class for two years and continued to sing in what was then a folk choir at a different parish.
When Ma Bell broke up in 1984, Neil began his long career with MCI. An opportunity arose for a sales job with MCI in Austin, Texas. Neil trusted his wife Janet enough to move here sight unseen. Neil moved through the ranks from a sales job to a national account executive with the state of Texas to an application specialist. He was an account executive when MCI merged with WorldCom and then became Verizon Business in 2004. He was the global account manager of the Dell account for seven years. Throughout his long tenure he won many awards and he and Janet enjoyed many trips as part of the Chairman’s Inner Circle to Maui and Tucson, just to name a few.
Neil also spent two years working for Hewlett Packard information technology as a global telecom data service manager and two years with Dunn and Bradstreet here in Austin as a relationship manager. He passed away while still employed by Twin Liquors as the manager of the store in Bee Cave, Texas.
Neil and Janet found their spiritual home at Saint Theresa Catholic Church in Northwest Hills in 1984. They quickly joined the contemporary choir at the 9 AM mass. They were one of the first to enter the new Cantor program and enjoyed many years of singing the Psalm at Mass as a married couple. They would arrive early before Mass and as Janet would put the numbers on the board for the hymns, Neil would set up the chairs and the microphones for the choir.
They very much enjoyed hosting the 9 AM Choir Christmas rehearsal and party at their house. Through the years before other family members moved to Austin, the 9 AM Choir was their chosen family, and they remain so to this day.
Neil is survived by his wife, Janet, and their nine-year-old English cream golden retriever Turley. They were not blessed with children, but with loving golden retrievers throughout their married life. Neil is survived by four brothers & their families: Older brother Mark and wife Cathy of Leander, their daughter Rachel and her husband Jeff, their son Josh;Younger brother Tim and wife Belford of Florida, their daughter Mariah and husband John; and their son Jake with his wife Selah and their son Henry;
Younger brother Paul and his wife Beth of Virginia Beach and his daughters Megan and husband Justin with daughter Riley, Charley with husband Chris and daughter Lily, and son Kyle with wife Celeste and children Elsie and Memphis; Younger brother Karl and his wife Cheryl of Austin with their children Christopher, Seth and Gina. Neil is also survived by his 3 godchildren: Daniel Alexander Timko, Christopher Martin and Nicole Grimes.
Neil loved having the family stay at the home he built to house them, and enjoyed feeding them and sharing his love of wine with them. Neil was committed to his career, but also to God and his family. On trips, he enjoyed visiting with family, and he enjoyed the fruit of the vine while visiting different regions in California.
He will be greatly missed by many. Neil’s memorial service will be Friday, April 14 at 10 AM at
St. Theresa Catholic Church, 4311 Small Drive, Austin 78731. In Lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Cancer Society or your favorite charity. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.cookwaldenfuneralhome.com for the Martin family.
