Nieves E. Flores Jr. lived 83 joyous years and passed into the Lord’s hands on 12/16/20. He was a faithful servant to the Lord and his church, serving in many capacities while his health permitted him to be active. He spent the majority of his career working for the City of Austin at Brackenridge Hospital in Plant Operations.
Nieves took faithful care of his wife, Ruby, in the later years of his life and was said to “give the shirt off his back” for those in need. He lived as the Lord wanted – a true example of kindness and generosity.
Anyone who knew Nieves will remember that he was constantly on the go and tinkering with something. Even as he aged and began to be affected by health ailments, he found a way to keep active. He loved working in his yard and in fact, was just photographed for the paper in November 2020 sitting on his walker chair raking leaves and picking pecans in his yard. He was a “hustler”, always looking for something to do to keep busy. He loved to weld and do woodworking. Many in the family have received precious handmade gifts over the years that Nieves crafted. He had an agile mind and would formulate mechanical solutions to problems and enjoyed such discussions. He loved to debate all sorts of topics, had a ready wit and strong opinions. He was described by most people as “a delight” and “quite the character”. Nieves was kind of heart and had a generous nature. He was truly a lovely person and will be greatly missed.
Nieves is survived by his wife Ruby Herrera Flores, to whom he was married for 63 years; His children Joseph N. Flores III and his wife Debra; Deborah E. Ortiz and her husband Benjamin; and Carl R. Flores and his wife Marisa; Grand-children Amanda Martinez and her husband Marin, Benjamin Ortiz Jr., Nicole Flores and her husband Bryan, Caprice Flores and her husband Alex, Zachariah Flores and Faith Flores; 8 Great Grand-children - Rubi, Abram, Joaquin, Maddox, Dre, Cameron, Ryann and Jade; his sister Catarina Ortiz and too many in-laws, nieces and nephews to count. All were greatly loved.
Nieves was preceded in death by his parents Nieves E. Flores Sr. and Ana Esperanza Doria Flores; and siblings Trinidad, Gabriel, Esperanza, Gonzala, and Juanita.
The family wishes to thank the associates from DaVita Dialysis centers, where Nieves spent over 9 hours per week for the last several years. Nieves would talk frequently about the many associates who cared for him and shared stories during his time there. We also wish to thank the many associates and physicians of Ascension Seton Medical Center who cared for Nieves during the last 10 days of his life. Even though Nieves was on a COVID unit and could not have visitors, the associates worked hard to provide compassionate care, keep the family informed of his condition and arranged a video chat session with Nieves as his condition declined so that the family could say good-byes. It was a difficult time for all, and we are grateful for the effort the associates made to ensure we had this time.
Due to COVID restrictions, there will not be a public viewing. Instead, there will be a remembrance gathering arranged at a later time.
REMINDER: There are COVID-19 + and exposed people in the immediate family. We do not want the funeral to be a super spreader event. Last thing we want is someone getting this from us and what could happen. We will understand if people do NOT come. That’s why we will do a remembrance later. Nieves and the family know you love him and us, but carefully consider your safety before deciding whether to attend. If you come, you must mask, socially distance and sanitize. On behalf of the family, your support is appreciated.
