Norma Jeanne Lanier Olinger Norma Jeanne Lanier Olinger, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend passed away Wednesday, July 14, 2004 after a valiant fight with ovarian cancer. The eldest of four children, Norma was born to Leon Isaiah Lanier and Grace Harper Lanier on July 25, 1931 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She attended elementary and high school there. She was graduated from the University of Virginia School of Nursing in 1952. While at UVA, Norma met medical student, Sheff Daniel Olinger, Jr. They were married in 1953 and recently celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary. In the early years of their marriage Norma supported and accompanied her husband, working at Tripler Army Hospital in Honolulu, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They came to Dallas, Texas where Norma devoted herself to her children and various charitable activities. She was active in the Highland Park schools PTAs, the Dallas Medical Society Auxiliary, and the Assistance League of Dallas. She supported and contributed in essential ways to her husbands successful career in neurology. Throughout her life Norma loved to play the piano and did so joyfully for family and friends. She was also an avid reader and, after moving to Georgetown, Texas eight years ago, became a devoted member of the Sun City Book Club, a group that provided her with many hours of conversation, insight, and friendship. Norma was preceded in death by her father. She is survived by her loving husband, Dr. Sheff Daniel Olinger, Jr. of Georgetown; her daughter, Nancy Olinger and husband Ferdie Rodriguez of Austin; her son Sheff Daniel Olinger III and wife, Laina Olinger of Dallas; and her daughter Amy Aldridge and husband, Gambill Aldridge of Elkin, North Carolina. She is also survived by her mother, Grace Harper Lanier, and sisters Linda Isley and Betty Fox, all of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; her brother, Leon Lanier; and her grandchildren Mary Clare, David, and Becca Rodriguez; Halston, Lauren, and Audrey Olinger; and Emma Grace Aldridge. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends. Memorial services will be conducted by her friend, the Rev. Linda Watkins, in Georgetown at 11:00 on Tuesday, July 20, 2004, at the Wellspring United Methodist Church, 6200 Williams Drive. A second memorial service will be conducted in Elkin, North Carolina at a time to be determined later. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Assistance League of Dallas, 9845 N. Central Expressway, Dallas, Texas 75231. The family would also like to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to Drs. Michael Tenneriello, Brant Victor, Ed Peters, Mark Crozier, and Adam Schneider, and the Seton Hospital nurses on 7 North for their kind attention to Norma and her family.
