
Olga Bredt Gideon passed away on Tuesday, February 8, 2005 at the age of 94. Born on May 11, 1910, in Avery, Red River County, Texas to William Y. and Callie Medford Knight, she was a resident of Austin since 1924. Upon graduation from Austin High School, Olga attended The University of Texas at Austin, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree and membership in Phi Beta Kappa. After teaching school in Leander and working several years as a legal secretary at the firm of Powell, Wirtz, Rauhut, and Gideon (now McGinnis, Lochridge and Kilgore), she served as District Secretary to family friend, Congressman Homer Thornberry, continuing as his secretary after his appointment to the federal bench until her retirement in 1972. Olga was a long-time member of the University United Methodist Church, the Austin Womans Club, the University Ladies Club, the Brackenridge Hospital Auxiliary and served on the boards of Lakeside Activity Center and Brackenridge Hospital. She was predeceased by her brother and sister and two wonderful husbands, Carl V. Bredt, Dean of Men at The University of Texas at Austin, who died in 1961 and W. Sim Gideon, General Manager of the Lower Colorado River Authority for many years, who passed away in 1996. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Bredt Norwood and husband Bob; grandson, Bredt Norwood and wife Bitsy; and great-grandson, Ben, all of Austin. In addition, she was blessed with two loving step-daughters, Patty Gideon Sloan and husband John of Houston, and Sue Gideon Brown and husband Robert of New Braunfels, and their seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to the administration and staff of Westminster Health Care Center who provided such quality care for Olga during the past several years. Visitation will be Friday, February 11th, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar. Graveside services will be private.
