The most enduring gifts my father gave me was a love of the printed word, and a lively interest in the world around me. Some of my fondest memories are of him reading to me. Even as adults, we loved to discuss books we read. 

Dad also loved nature and found pleasure in its beauty. We had many long and happy conversations simply about flowers, birds, what the local squirrels were doing, etc. These things weren't small to him; the beauty of nature was an ongoing treasure to be enjoyed every day. The love of these things are the treasures he's passed on to me, something far more valuable and enduring than any other treasure a parent could give.
