Pat Fatter died at her home on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at age 92. Patricia Elaine Kelly was born on September 17, 1920 in New Orleans, Louisiana. She was raised and educated in New Orleans where she attended public schools and Sophie Newcomb College. On September 4, 1940, she married Mervin Edward Fatter, M.D. at St. George's Episcopal Church, New Orleans. In 1947, following his service in World War II, they moved to Austin where Mervin began his practice of urology. The two were married for 49 years prior to his death in September 1999.
Pat was a member of All Saint's Episcopal Church where she served on the altar guild and was a founding member of the board of St. Andrew's Episcopal School. She was a life member of the St. David's Hospital Auxiliary and the Travis County Medical Alliance. Pat and Mervin loved and enjoyed their four grandchildren and frequented years of T-ball, tennis and soccer. Pat and Mervin loved and were loved by their four grandchildren who were an important part of their lives. Pat was a remarkable cook and hostess. She loved to needlepoint, was an avid reader, and excelled at crossword puzzles, gumbo and red beans and rice. She was a pushover for English Bulldogs and butterflies, and her back porch was an annual hummingbird haven. Blue Bell Mint Chocolate Chip ice cream was her favorite food. Pat gracefully accepted her declining health with humility and a sense of humor.
An only child, Pat was predeceased by her parents, Laura Villio and Benjamin Francis Kelly. She is survived by her three children: Patricia Fatter Black, Mervin E. Fatter, Jr. and wife Marianne, and Laura Elaine Fatter. Also surviving are four grandchildren: Christopher Sean Fatter Black, M.D. (wife, Jennifer Edwards, M.D); Mervin Edward Fatter, III (wife, Daphne Davis Fatter); Robert Clinton Fatter, M.D. (wife, Holly Mead Fatter, M.D.); and Kate Mairin Fatter, in addition to four great-grandsons: Christopher Kyle Edwards Black, Ryan Edwards Black, Lucas Edwards Black, and Josiah Edwards Black. Pat was generously blessed with a multitude of friends and caring neighbors.
Pat's family wishes to extend special thanks to Frances Mojica, Jessica Mojica, Cecilia Mojica, and Leola Cotton for their loving care, kindness and dedicated service to our Mom. Words can't adequately convey our heartfelt appreciation for each of them.
A memorial service in celebration of Pat Fatter's life will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, August 9th at All Saint's Episcopal Church, 209 W. 27th Street in Austin. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to All Saint's Episcopal Church or to St. Andrew's Episcopal School.
