Patricia (Pat) Howard, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, mentor, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2026, after a long illness, surrounded by the love of her family. She leaves behind a legacy of generosity, wisdom, strength, and unconditional love that touched countless lives.
Pat was born on March 31, 1957. Her life was defined by curiosity, adventure, and a deep commitment to learning and connection. Born in Arizona and raised in San Antonio, she later lived in Germany, and also spent time in Houston, where she worked as a teacher. Throughout her life, she carried a lifelong passion for education and for engaging with people from all walks of life.
After settling in Austin, Pat became a highly respected business owner and professional. She was the owner of Howard Tax LLC and was widely known for her exceptional knowledge of tax and finance—a field she seemed to master with remarkable ease. Her intelligence, work ethic, and dedication earned the respect and admiration of colleagues, clients, friends, and family alike.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 40 years, Jim Howard, with whom she built a life centered on family, hard work, adventure, and unwavering support for one another. She is also survived by her son, James Howard; stepdaughters Kim Parkman and Christy Graham; and her grandchildren Zach Howard, Katie Graham, Collin Graham, Addie Parkman, and Gideon Parkman; as well as her brother, John Rutledge.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Hildred Rutledge. In addition to her immediate family, Pat leaves behind countless dear friends, extended family members, colleagues, clients, and loved ones whose lives she touched—truly too many to name.
To many, Pat was far more than family. She was a second mother, a trusted confidante, and a steady source of guidance and encouragement. People were naturally drawn to her wisdom, kindness, and her remarkable ability to make others feel seen, valued, and cared for. Her advice was thoughtful, practical, and often exactly what was needed in the moment.
Despite her many accomplishments, what will be remembered most is her heart. Pat gave generously of her time, wisdom, resources, and love. She celebrated the successes of others, stood faithfully beside them during difficult times, and created a sense of home and comfort wherever she went. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.
A farewell remembrance honoring Pat’s life will be held on June 4 at 3:00 p.m. at Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills Funeral Home, located at Anderson Mill and Highway 183 in Austin. A graveside service at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery will be held at a later date.
The family kindly requests that, if possible, those planning to attend the farewell remembrance notify the family in advance by emailing [email protected], as it will greatly assist with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge, an organization dedicated to rescuing and providing lifelong sanctuary for abused and neglected wild animals.
