Dr. Ramon Burstyn born on September 14, 1928, passed away on November 30, 2020 at the age of 92 in his home in Scottsdale, Arizona where he had been living since 2012 to be close to his daughter, Dawn.
Ramon, a doctor of Optometry, together with his father Adolph, served the Austin community with their practices for a combined total of 108 years before his retirement in 2012. Generations of Austinites received the finest care for the health of their eyes from Dr. Burstyn, an Optometrist of the Year award recipient. Growing up in Austin he was an Eagle Scout and Scout leader, eventually graduating from Cal Berkley. Service was his calling which led him to become a medical Captain in the Army and veteran of the Korean War before returning to Austin with the love of his life Adeline to begin their family.
Dr. Burstyn was an avid exerciser throughout his life with daily routines of rowing Town Lake, riding his bicycle, jogging Camp Mabry, and most importantly swimming at Barton Springs. The family will attest to the fact that Ramon had no wrinkles upon passing from that cold water of Barton’s for all those years. As the team eye Doc for the Texas Longhorns sports for a couple decades, he was a died in the wool fan, even when one of his grandsons attended Texas A&M. When offered an Aggie shirt by the family, he declined in, shall we say, a gruff and emphatic "NO!" To his last days he would give the “HOOKEM HORNS” sign. Ramon and Adeline were lifelong members of Temple Beth Israel of Austin, as were his mother Blanche and father Adolph.
Ramon is survived by his son Pearce of Dallas, Texas; his daughter Dawn and her Husband Lawrence Meyers of Fountain Hills, Arizona; his grandsons Blake Meyers of Houston and Brent Meyers of Arizona, as well as brother Edwin “Boots” Burstyn of Dallas and his sister Margie Burka of Houston.
Ramon has traveled home to his beloved State of Texas and will be laid to rest with military honors on Wednesday, December 9th at High Noon (he loved that movie) at the Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery right next to his love, Adeline.
