With heavy hearts and profound sadness, we announce the passing of Rex Timothy Fortune, a beloved husband, father, PopPop, son, brother, friend, craftsman, and man of unwavering faith. While our hearts are broken by his absence, we are forever grateful for the love, laughter, and countless memories he leaves behind.
Born on January 18, 1964, in Austin, Texas, Rex spent his life rooted in the community he loved. He attended Westlake High School, where he met his high school sweetheart, Sheila Hamilton. Rex quite literally two-stepped his way into Sheila's heart. They danced through life together, sharing a remarkable 41 years of marriage built on love, devotion, and laughter.
Rex's greatest accomplishment was his family. He was a devoted husband who adored Sheila, a proud father to Shawn, Shannon, and Lacee, and the most dedicated PopPop anyone could ask for. His grandchildren were the light of his life, and he rarely missed an opportunity to cheer them on. Whether at a ballfield, gym, or any event that involved one of his grandbabies, Rex was always there—watching with pride, offering encouragement, and celebrating every accomplishment with tears of joy in his eyes. His treasured grandchildren, Brynlee, Kaelynn, Kynzlee, Zae, and Meila brought him immeasurable joy and were the source of some of his biggest smiles.
Known for his incredible craftsmanship, Rex was a master carpenter whose work reflected not only his skill but also his heart. He paid attention to every detail and poured love into everything he built. The structures, furniture, and projects he created stand as lasting reminders of his talent, patience, and dedication. If Rex built it, it was built to last.
Rex had a deep love for the outdoors and enjoyed spending time dove hunting with his dogs and fishing whenever he had the chance. He was also a passionate supporter of the Texas Longhorns and never missed an opportunity to proudly say, "Hook 'em."
Faith was an important cornerstone of Rex's life. He was a founding member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, where he worked alongside his father to physically help build the church. His service, commitment, and faithfulness to his church family reflected the same generosity and servant's heart he showed throughout his life.
Rex leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, hard work, and family. While his passing leaves an unimaginable void, those who knew him find comfort in the memories he created, the lessons he taught, and the love he shared. He will be deeply missed every day, but his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were blessed to know him.
Rex is survived by his loving wife, Sheila Fortune; his children, Shawn (Leslie), Shannon (Justin), and Lacee; his treasured grandchildren, Brynlee, Kaelynn, Kynzlee, Zae, and Meila; and sister, Yvonne Landes (Bobby).
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Marie Fortune.
A Memorial Service will be held at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 3525 Bee Caves Road, Austin, Texas, on Sunday, June 28, at 2:00 p.m. A gathering with the family will be held immediately following the service in the church gymnasium.
A Celebration of Life party exactly the way Rex would have wanted it and will be held at a later date to be announced.
Rex's love, laughter, wisdom, and steadfast devotion to his family will never be forgotten. His footprints remain in the lives he touched, and his memory will be cherished forever.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church.
