One of my favorite memories of my uncle was when we went to Austin and he had a cat named Bandit. He loved to show us that Bandit did not want to go outside and when asked about going outside, Bandit would play dead. He thought that was the funniest thing ever (which made me laugh just watching him).

Uncle Ricky was always smiling. He never seemed to have a care in the world (and when you are a little kid, you think that is the coolest thing an adult can experience). He would shuffle around my grandmother’s house cracking jokes that he would then immediately laugh at. I loved that about him. I hardly ever saw him where shoes and he often wore overalls. He remains the ultimate hippie in my mind. Hope you are enjoying the other side, Uncle Ricky. You lived life your way. That’s pretty groovy.

When he was 18, I had decided to go do some free climbing on the backside of Enchanted Rock. As was always the case, he had to do everything I ever did! He was the little brother.  He was always on the hefty side and I explained rock climbing isn't as easy as it seems. He insisted that he could keep up, so against my better judgement, I let him tag along.  There are a variety of climbs on the backside of this granite blob in the middle of Central Texas. I selected one that would not be difficult for him.  About halfway up he came to a point where the climb got stiffer and he grew tired.  He was wedged into a crack in the rock where the easiest way up or down, was to grab up to a handhold within reach and pull himself up.  But with his stamina giving out, he could only picture himself falling.  I kept encouraging him to reach up to the handhold above him,  but his inexperience and his weight were getting the better of him. I manuevered down below him and shoved his hefty bottom up to enable him to reach that crach in the rock to pull himself up.  From there his confidence grew and managed to get to the top.  With that big old grin on his face, his eyes twinkled and he said "See! I told you I could do it! And I suppose he did it, his way!    

Ricky was always  so happy and constantly laughing out loud. It was such a thrill to spend the weekends with the cousins.  When one is young, most anything can be an adventure. In one area that we visited with Ricky, they were on a farm and had a pond with ducks. Once we were able to go  on a hay ride and that was a memorable experience. Life was so simple and carefree.  We were just not old enough to worry like adults about the possessions we had or didn't have.  The memories happened long ago but are still intact and seems like only occurred. That is the way I will remember my cousin on any given visit growing up. Love Jonny.
