I met Dr Buck in the Spring of 1971. My mom had taken me to see him as another dentist in Austin wanted to straighten my teeth with just a retainer. We were new to Austin at the time and we were referred to Dr Buck.

I got my braces in on June 21,1971 and wore them for two years. I was then put into a bite position then a retainer. I finished my orthodontic care with Dr Buck in January of 1979.

I will always remember his smile and strong handshake.

To the Family of Dr. Buck,
I saw Dr. Buck’s column in today’s Statesman. I want to share my recognition of him with each of you.

In 1972 I was 16 and needed braces badly. My parents did not have the funds to pay for orthodontic care. I got an afternoon job after school then made an appointment with Dr. Buck. He evaluated me and reviewed my paperwork. When I got home that evening my mom told me he had called her to ask if she was aware I was in his office that day for braces. She told him no, but if that’s what I wanted to do with my money then it was my decision.

So he put braces on my awful teeth. I paid him $50 a month for several years. Then I got a retainer. After 6 months he was dissatisfied and asked if I would be willing to put the braces back on. At his expense, no charge to me.

The moral of this story is that I learned the value of a job because I knew you pay off your debts. And I learned that some adults do take chances with teenagers and trust them. Dr. Buck was the person who taught me this and I have repeated this story quite a few times, to my own children and my friends.

I am grateful that such a man lived a long and wonderful life with what sounds like a very loving family.

My dad moved into Westminster in November, 2018. He and Dr. Buck became fast friends, and my dad eventually declared him his “best friend”. I’m so happy they had one another to get through the later years and eat ice cream with. My dad and I miss him already.

I’ve been honored to work with Dr. Buck for many years. He always seemed to have a positive nature a smile on his face and a warm handshake... I will truly miss him as I know you will too
