Richard Jones McIntire passed away on November 3, 2005 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Richard was born on March 22, 1928 in Council Bluffs, Iowa to Osie Leigh McIntire and Mary Ann Blattner McIntire. Along with his parents and two brothers, Richard moved to Austin in 1941 where his father took a position as Director of Education at the Texas School for the Deaf. Richard attended Austin High School and The University of Texas. At the university, he studied business and history, was sports editor of The Daily Texan, and was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Richard completed two tours of duty in Korea with the Navy and played for the Navy basketball team. After serving in the military, Richard resettled in Austin and went to work for the state. During this time, he met the love of his life, Evelyn Joyce Cox, who was working at The University of Texas while pursuing her masters degree. They married in December 1956. While traveling extensively through Europe, their first daughter Mary Leigh was born in 1957 in Geneva, Switzerland. They returned to Austin where Richard, along with four other investors, built the Pier restaurant on Lake Austin. Their second daughter Shannon was born in Austin in 1963. After managing the Pier for a few years, Richard settled into a career as a real estate appraiser. Following the death of his wife, Richard devoted himself to raising his daughters. Richard retired from real estate appraising in 1985. Richard will be remembered for his generosity, friendliness, and his ever-present sense of humor. Most of all, Richard will be remembered for his devotion to his family. His passions included books, the gulf coast, jazz, socializing with friends, and baseball especially U.T. baseball. He will be deeply missed by his many friends and family. Richard is survived by his daughters, Mary Leigh McIntire and Shannon McIntire Johnson, and family; and his two brothers, William L. McIntire and George C. McIntire, and their families. Richards family would like to thank Dr. John Costanzi, Tracy, Mickey, and the nursing staff at Lone Star Oncology, Dr. Pappadapoulous and staff at M.D. Anderson, Dr. Declan Fleming, and the outstanding staff at Hospice Austin in particular, Melissa, Barbara, J.R. and Jackie. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice Austin and M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston.
