Richard passed away surrounded by family on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 2025. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Linda Johnson Stone; daughter Kathryn Long Stone; daughter Jennifer Stone Wolkind and son-in-law Ed Wolkind and granddaughters, Emily Kate and Elizabeth Ann (Betsy) Wolkind and brother E.S. Stone III and wife Judy of El Paso, Tx; and numerous loving family members and friends.
Richard was born in Hermann Hospital, Houston, Tx on September 1, 1943, to E.S. Stone, Jr. and Fannie Lou Long Stone. He grew up in Freeport, Texas and attended Brazosport High School and Kemper Military School in Boonville, Missouri. He graduated from Sam Houston State University in 1967 with a degree in Business, and entered the army, serving in Vietnam for two years. In 1978 he completed his MBA from Houston Baptist College while employed by Houston Natural Gas Company. Richard continued his career in the oil and gas business with Houston Pipeline, Enron and Kinder Morgan Inc.
Richard and Linda lived in West University Place (Houston) for over 40 years before moving to Austin in 2012 to be near their two daughters and families. Richard loved being near Jenny & Ed, Emily and Betsy, and Katie. He took so much pride in supporting them in their careers and activities, enjoying many happy and memorable events and adventures! Living in the Long Canyon neighborhood, (Austin) Richard took great interest in the HOA, volunteering on the HOA Board’s committees and activities.
Richard enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved staying in touch with lifelong friends from childhood, college, and Vietnam, as well as business colleagues. His “Band of Brothers” include Robert A. (Bob) Brown, Willam D. (Bill) Meyer, Mike Weems, Pat Weems, Richard Long, Don Dancak, Lance Wade, Tom Landers, John G. Baugh, Richard Sutliffe, Rex Zeanah, Grant Buehrig, Joe Kent, David Honeycutt, Carl Sanger, Pat Suggs, and Terry Bond.
Honoring Richard’s request, the family will plan a graveside service at a later date in Victoria Texas.
Those wishing to make a memorial donation in Richard’s name are asked to choose a charity/foundation of their choice.
