Bob was born on April 19, 1940, in Homestead, Pennsylvania. He graduated from McKeesport High School in Pennsylvania. Bob joined the U.S. Air Force at age 20. He was stationed in Salina, Kansas where he met the love of his life, Connie. They married and started their family tree with their daughter Pam, then sons Kelly and Sean. Bob and Connie were married 58 years at the time of his death.
Bob spent 21 years in the Air Force where he rose to the rank of Senior Master Sergeant and quickly became known for his athletic abilities in Air Force Sports competitions held all over the world. SMSGT Barna utilized his passion and knowledge in athletics to grow into leadership roles for Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) on US Air Force bases worldwide. MWR services helped serve the airman, officers and their families to find activities that provided a space to thrive during stressful times of service and deployment. SMSGT Barna was deployed to critical areas during some of our nation’s major conflicts like the Vietnam War serving the flight crews that flew bombing missions from Guam. Most of SMSGT Barna’s time was spent in the Air Force during the Cold War era and was stationed in places like Strategic Air Command Headquarters Offutt AFB, Nebraska, Saudi Arabia, Okinawa, and Andrews AFB, and Washington DC. Bob retired from the air force after his final assignment to Bergstrom AFB in Austin, TX.
After his retirement from the Air Force, Bob became an Operations Manager with Capitol Beverage Austin, TX, where he made several indelible friendships and started the informal Saturday morning golf league with many of the employees. Family and Golf were Bob’s passions. These were two things that he put before all else in life. Bob’s Saturday morning golf group was not only a family tradition, but it also became well known around the Austin area. Most people remember Bob for his engaging personality, big smile, and the most endearing blue eyes.
Bob is survived by his wife, Connie, his sister, Maureen Benko (husband Frank Benko), brother, Bill Barna, daughter Pamela Harries, (husband, Mark Harries), and his sons, Kelly Barna (wife Tina Jacks), and Sean Barna (wife Krissy Barna).
