Robert was born on May 18, 1944, in Temple, Texas, to Albert and Maycle Hargrove. He graduated from Temple High School in 1962 and soon after moved to Austin, where he began his working career with the old Davis Hardware Company on Congress Avenue. In 1969, Robert joined IBM at their North Austin location, where he built his second career and remained until his retirement in 1988.
In his retirement years, he and his wife, Donna, established a business selling items at arts and crafts shows and gun shows throughout Texas. Robert enjoyed woodworking, so he began making numerous handcrafted creations that were sold at the arts and crafts shows. He would then travel with Donna to these shows where he enjoyed meeting people from all walks of life. Many of those acquaintances became lifelong friends and adopted family members, relationships Robert treasured deeply.
In the fall, he loved watching his beloved Texas A&M Aggies play football and then cheering for the Houston Astros in the spring. Yet nothing compared to his biggest passion, attending professional rodeos and bull riding events with Donna. He was a Rodeo Austin season ticket holder for many years. One of the highlights of every year for him was his trip to Las Vegas with Donna for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, where they have been a season ticket holder since 1995. True to his passion, Robert attended the PBR World Finals in May 2026, which became his final grand adventure.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Billie McInturf of Corpus Christi, Texas.
He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Donna, who was at his side until the very end, and their cherished furbabies, TJ, Hollywood, and Bear.
He also leaves behind his daughter, Stacie Sherva, and her husband, Tim, of Hutto, Texas, along with their children, Taylor and Case. He is further survived by his brother-in-law, Virgil Bruce McFarland of Kingsland, Texas; his niece, Lindsey McFarland and her wife, Heather, of Ladera Ranch, California, and their children, Brennan and Beckett; and his niece, Brittany Fetterman and her husband, Brian, of Austin, Texas, and their son, Ethan.
Robert also leaves behind two extraordinary friends whom he proudly considered his daughters, Stormy Melton and Amber Green, as well as many dear friends whose lives were enriched by his kindness, humor, and unwavering friendship.
No services are planned at this time.
