Robert C. “Lou” McCreary departed this life on May 27, 2026, at 86 years old. He leaves behind his cherished wife of 45 years, Patsy—affectionately known as “Miss Honey Pie”—and his two “outstanding daughters,” Casey McCreary and Megan McCreary Farris. He is also survived by Megan’s husband, Tyler Farris, and their sons, Ford and Finn, who lovingly called him “Grandpa Lou.” He was preceded in death by his adventurous middle daughter, Keith McCreary Donnally.
Lou lived by the saying, “You only live once, but once is enough if you do it right,” and he proved it every day. He was a lifelong Democrat, an avid Texas Longhorn, and a devoted Longview Lobo from the Class of ’58. For more than 50 years, he practiced as a trial lawyer in Austin, and he also served as Executive Assistant Attorney General under Jim Mattox.
A proud Progressive Democrat, Lou was a fixture at the Yeller Dawg Democrats’ Saturday gatherings, where matters of the day were thoroughly “cussed and discussed.” He believed deeply in citizenship, in mentoring young lawyers, and in encouraging aspiring political candidates.
His love of the arts led him to Zach Theater, where he performed in several productions. A passionate student of the Constitution, Lou wrote, produced, and starred as John Adams in Ben Franklin & Friends Return to Defend the Constitution performing it for Democratic groups across Texas.
Lou’s life will be celebrated Saturday, June 20, at Saint Austin Catholic Church beginning at 10 a.m. with a mass, followed by a reception. The church is located at 2026 Guadalupe St., Austin.
