Rodney Jerome Wingwood

Rodney Jerome Wingwood was born on August 25, 1960, in Austin, Texas, at the historic Brackenridge Hospital, to the late John H. Wingwood and Coraline E. Wingwood-Brown (Hightower). Rodney received his education in the Austin Independent School District and graduated from Albert Sidney Johnston High School. An exceptional athlete, he was widely recognized throughout the Austin community for his basketball talent and commanding height. His skills on the court earned him an opportunity to play basketball at Huston-Tillotson University, where he attended for a brief time. Rodney worked for the State of Texas for 16 years and for the City of Austin for a lengthy period. Rodney accepted Christ at an early age and remained a believer throughout his life. After marrying Patricia, the two became faithful members of Eastside Baptist Church in Austin, Texas, Pastor Leland Dandridge, where they worshipped together in fellowship and faith. Known for his strength, warm spirit, and love for basketball, Rodney leaves behind a legacy of family, friendship, and faith. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, but his memory will forever remain in the hearts of those whose lives he touched. Rodney was preceded in death by his father, John Herman Wingwood; his mother, Coraline E. Wingwood-Brown; his sister, Stephanie G. Wingwood-Jennings; and his beloved stepdaughter, Turkassa (Terrie) McMillion. Rodney was blessed with two children through his relationship with Landis Mulkey of New Braunfels, Texas. He was the proud father of his daughter, Dametria Wingwood-Winters (Randall) of Virginia, and his son, DeAndrey Wingwood of Nashville, Tennessee. Rodney cherished his role as a grandfather to Dametria's four children: Nevaeh Janae Winters, Randall Jay Winters, Jr., Darell Jerome Winters, and Jarrell Christopher Winters. On August 25, 2007, Rodney married the love of his life, Patricia Hunter. Through their union, he lovingly gained two stepdaughters: Turkassa (Terrie) McMillion (Matthew) and Turkeisha "Keisha" Sawyer. He was also blessed with several grandchildren: Monique Sawyer, Monice Sawyer, Michael Sawyer Jr., and Matthew McMillion II, as well as great-grandchildren Tevell Knous Jr., Elijah Sawyer, Roman Sawyer, and Alora Jenkins. Rodney treasured the time he spent with his family and enjoyed watching the family grow through the generations. Rodney leaves to cherish his loving memory his devoted wife of 19 years, Patricia Wingwood; his daughter, Dametria Wingwood-Winters (Randall) of Virginia; his son, DeAndrey Wingwood of Nashville, Tennessee; and his stepdaughter, Turkeisha "Keisha" Sawyer. He is also survived by his sisters, Karen Wingwood-Dixon, Rebecca “Chell” Wingwood, and Rochelle Jones; his brothers, Gerald Kizzee, John A. Wingwood, James “Bo” Wingwood, Jon “Freddie” Wingwood, Donald Jones, and James Jones. Rodney also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Nevaeh Janae Winters, Randall Jay Winters, Jr., Darrell Jerome Winters, Jarrell Christopher Winters, Monique Sawyer, Monice Sawyer, Michael Sawyer Jr., and Matthew McMillion II; his great-grandchildren, Tevell Knous Jr., Elijah Sawyer, Roman Sawyer, and Alora Jenkins; along with a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.
