Romi Lewis, beloved wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2026 in Austin, Texas, surrounded by family. Romi lived her life with grace, style, and a quiet joy that touched everyone around her. Romi had an eye for beauty and enjoyed the finer things in life, yet never lost the grounded, practical spirit that made her so easy to love. Friends knew her as warm, witty, and just a little irreverent in the best possible way.
Romi's life was vibrant and filled with many chapters, and she was an independent woman who wasn't afraid to forge her own path. She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she spent the early years of her life, and that “Pittsburgh steel” forged the toughness and grit that made her such a strong woman. In 1976, she married the love of her life, Barry Lewis, in Atlanta, Georgia. Together they shared a love of music, travel, and a life well lived. Romi and Barry spent many years in Atlanta, as well as Salt Lake City and Houston. In 2001, they moved to Austin, Texas, which became the backdrop for the final chapter of their life together.
Romi is survived by her daughter, Misha Rangel; her son-in-law, Mark Rangel; her grandsons, Lewis and AJ Rangel; and her niece and nephew, Kathy Kozlowski and John Krusac. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Barry Lewis, who passed in 2018. Romi and Barry were blessed to have spent 42 years together.
Romi will be remembered for her elegance, sophistication, and intelligence. The epitome of quiet strength, she gave her unwavering loyalty to everyone she loved.
In the iconic words of Willie Nelson, “I knew someday that you would fly away, For love's the greatest healer to be found, So leave me if you need to, I will still remember…Angel flying too close to the ground.”
A memorial service will be held for Romi at St. David's Episcopal Church, 301 East 8th Street, Austin, Texas 78701 on Wednesday, June 10 at 2:00 PM.
Memorial contributions can be made in her name to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
