Born in San Angelo, Texas, on November 22, 1944, Rosemary grew up in Midland, Texas, where she attended Midland High School. She excelled academically and was voted “Friendliest Girl,” a title that remained fitting throughout her life. After graduation, she continued her education at The University of Texas at Austin, following in the footsteps of her brother, Keys, and her sister, Robinette. At UT, she was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and earned a degree in Sociology, with a minor in Spanish. Rosemary was a proud Life Member of the Texas Exes.
In 1969, Rosemary met the love of her life, Kenneth James Clapham, in San Antonio, Texas. Rosemary and Ken married in 1971 and for 54 years made their home together in Austin. Rosemary worked in daycare licensing for the State of Texas for many years before dedicating herself to raising her sons. She later returned to the workforce, first as a teacher at and later as the director of Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Preschool. A faithful member of Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church, she also later served as a deacon, reflecting her lifelong commitment to service. In retirement, she taught ESL courses and volunteered for literacy programs offered through the Austin school district. She was always happiest when helping others.
Rosemary devoted herself to creating a warm and welcoming home, rich in friendship, family, and tradition. Whether hosting holiday gatherings or preparing her famous chocolate chip cookies and pumpkin bread, she made everyone feel cared for and included. She delighted in decorating her home for every season and celebration, turning even the smallest holiday into something truly special.
She treasured time at “The Farm,” her family’s country retreat near La Grange, where relatives from across Texas and beyond gathered to rest, reconnect, and laugh together. She loved exploring antique shops and small country stores, as well as the booths at the City-Wide Garage Sale at Palmer Auditorium, always searching for unique finds — especially cookie cutters, of which she maintained a collection famous among family, friends, and fellow collectors. Music filled her home, and she rarely missed watching her beloved Texas Longhorns, provided the game was not too stressful!
She cherished her Bunko Group, Book Club, and Breakfast Club gatherings, and counted her many friends among her greatest blessings. Above all, she treasured being a wife, mother, and “Grammi.” She lovingly organized family photographs and scrapbooks, preserving cherished memories for generations to come. Her family and friends will miss her deeply but take comfort in the warmth, generosity, and joy she brought into their lives.
Rosemary is survived by her son Christopher (Jacqueline) and their children, Angelina and Oliver; and by her son John (Silvia) and their son, Santiago. She is also survived by her cherished cousin, Kathleen Lauten, and Kathleen’s family; her niece, Margaret Curry-Hamill (Leo); her nephew, Keys A. Curry III (Elizabeth), and Keys’ family; and other dear relatives and friends too many to list, all of whom brought her immeasurable joy.
Rosemary’s family extends their gratitude to her caregivers at Brookdale Beckett Meadows for the compassion and care provided at the end of her life, and for the special arrangements they made to allow Ken and her to spend time together at the end of Ken’s life. A memorial service will be held at Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church; details will be announced as they become available.
